When Lillian finally wrapped up company matters, the new semester had already been in session for over a week.
Her homeroom teacher had long grown used to her frequent absences and didn’t say much-after all, she always ranked first in every exam.
As she stepped back onto campus, she immediately noticed students whispering and casting her curious. looks. She frowned slightly. What, do I have flowers blooming on my face today or something?
Just as the thought crossed her mind, someone suddenly clapped her hard on the shoulder. A cheerful voice rang out.
“Lillian, you finally came to school!” Natalie said, practically bouncing with excitement.
Turning her head, Lillian found Natalie and Jill standing beside her, both grinning mischievously. She sighed helplessly.
“Are you two trying to scare my soul out of me p>
Jill laughed, looping her arm through Lillian’s. “We’re just messing with you. Natalie’s got the heart of a kid p>
Natalie quickly latched onto Lillian’s other arm and chuckled. “That’s right, we just wanted to spook you a little. You ditched us all through break, and now you’re back a whole week late. What did you expect p>
Lillian nodded solemnly. “You’ve got a point. Fine, I’ll accept the punishment p>
Her mock-serious expression set all three of them off, and they burst into sudden laughter together.
Then Natalie seemed to recall something and leaned in her tone turning serious. “Oh right, we’ve got a new transfer student in class. She’s insanely popular, practically dethroning the school belle. Lillian, you’d better watch out.” She gave a sly grin.
“A transfer student?” Lillian asked, puzzled.
Jill nodded. “Yeah. She’s no ordinary girl either-just transferred from Kingston. Total genius, super friendly, and gorgeous. Everyone’s already saying she’ll replace you as Riverdale High School’s new belle p>
Natalie sighed dramatically. “Yeah, beautiful, well-liked, and with a powerful family. The whole Solara upper circle is buzzing about her p>
Lillian glanced at her two friends and smiled faintly. “Alight, don’t waste your energy on nonsense. Let’s go -we’ll be late for class.” No wonder people had been giving her odd looks earlier.
Her calm dismissal left Natalie and Jill a little exasperate. How could someone have so little sense of crisis? Then again, maybe that attitude was exactly what set her apart.
Once they split up, Lillian walked into the classroom with Natalie. Her gaze immediately fell on the girl seated in the front row. She wore a long white coat over pink dress, paired with white ankle boots. Wide, glistening eyes, delicate features, and an air of pure innocence-she looked like she’d stepped straight off the cover of a fashion magazine.
Several girls crowded around her, showering her with praise.
“Eda, I think I just saw that outfit in the newest issue of magazine. It’s not even out in Solara yet, is it p>

“Our belle should be someone like Eda-top family, top grades, top looks. Only that kind of person can uphold Riverdale High’s reputation p>
Another chimed in. “Exactly. Riverdale High is Solara’s number one school. Our belle has to represent that standard in every way, or it cheapens the whole school p>
“You…” Natalie was ready to lash back, but Lillian caught her arm. Her gaze turned icy as she swept it across the group.
“If idle gossip behind people’s backs counts as Riverdale High’s so-called ‘standards,’ then frankly, it’s nothing to be proud of p>
