Lillian’s smile stayed serene. “A mix of luck and fate, I guess; maybe it was just meant to be.” Isn’t everything that’s happened to me nothing but fate, after all…
Ashley studied her closely, curiosity deepening. There was something about this calm, composed girl that she couldn’t quite read. For all her experience sizing people up, Lillian remained a mystery-but one Ashley found herself liking.
“Ashley, what are you doing hiding out here? Everyone’s been looking for you,” a few girls called as they walked over, their every detail exuding the refined air of high society.
At their lead was a woman in a striking rose-red evening gown, the fitted silhouette accentuating her curves. Her makeup was immaculate; every gesture and glance radiated the confidence of someone born into privilege.

Stella didn’t flinch; her smile stayed poised and superior. “Fate brought us together tonight, didn’t it? Think of it as making a friend. Kingston isn’t that big; we’re bound to run into each other sooner or later. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more friends—and more fun p>
Lillian arched a brow, her tone cool. “I appreciate the thought, but I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. I don’t live in Kingston, so we probably won’t run into each other often p>
Stella’s smile faltered. “Is that so? What a shame.” So she wasn’t part of Kingston’s inner circle after all—a complete waste of her time.
“Aren’t you Lillian from Solara Riverdale High School?” one of the girls beside her suddenly blurted, excitement lighting up her face.
Lillian blinked, caught off guard. “Do we know each other?” She was sure she’d never seen this girl before; her memory had never failed her.
The girl beamed. “No, we’ve never met, but I know you! Two years ago, that video of you online went viral at our school; and that song you sang-everyone was obsessed with it. I was hooked for the longest time. I can’t believe I’m actually meeting you here p>
Lillian never would’ve guessed that, even after two years, someone would still recognize her. “I’m glad you liked my singing p>
