Lillian fought hard to hold her ground against the men in black.
But one moment of distraction, and a sharp kick slammed into her abdomen.

As one of the men lunged in close, his strike fast and merciless, a flicker of blue light sparked at her fingertips; she was just about to release it when a dark figure shot past her in a blur.
She froze for half a second, startled by the sudden appearance of the man. But there was no time to think; the fight shifted instantly, the tide turning in their favor. Without hesitation, Lillian dove back into the fray. Within minutes, the six black-clad attackers were down, sprawled across the ground.
Breathing evenly, the man stood there-cold, unreadable.
“Unno,” Lillian said, her voice edged with surprise.
The man inclined his head respectfully. “Ms. Sinclair, the master sent me to protect you. He told me not to show myself unless it was absolutely necessary.” His tone was careful; Unno knew better than anyone how important this girl was to his master.
“Sebastian sent you,” Lillian said, though she already knew the answer; she just wanted to hear it confirmed.

“That isn’t something we, as subordinates, have the right to ask,” Unno replied, his voice steady and respectful.
Seeing that she wouldn’t get more out of him, Lillian let the subject drop. Instead, she crouched beside one of the bodies, tugging at the edge of the man’s clothes-only to freeze as she saw something writhing under his skin, slithering along his veins.
Shock flared in her eyes.
Blue’s voice rang sharply in her mind. It’s the beauty’s curse. Once the host dies, they’ll tear their way out, desperate to find another body to latch onto.
Beside her, Unno watched in stunned silence as the young woman calmly drew a slender blade, then dragged it across her own wrist without flinching. Small, squirming parasites spilled out, writhing as they hit the ground.
Even as a hardened man, the sight made his stomach churn-but the girl didn’t even blink.

When the last parasite had torn free, the corpse shriveled at a visible pace, collapsing into itself like air leaking from a balloon.
Both of them stared, stunned. So the worms had been feeding on blood all along.
Lillian checked the other bodies one by one; the conditions were exactly the same. Pulling a small bottle from her backpack, she poured a clear liquid over them. Before Unno could react, the corpses began to melt, breaking down into a slick pool of blood and nothing more.
Unno stared, wide-eyed. This girl… was terrifying.
Catching his look, Lillian’s lips curved into a sharp, wicked smile. “What? Planning to stay and clean up?” Her voice was mocking, her gaze cool as she brushed past him, striding toward the mouth of the alley.
Unno snapped out of it and hurried after her.
Back at the Golden Coast, Lillian stripped out of her clothes and stood under the shower until every trace of blood and stench was gone. Only after she’d dried off and slipped into a robe did she step out again.
From the freezer, she pulled out a cup of strawberry ice cream. The cold sweetness hit her tongue, soothing the lingering nausea; the rich, sugary flavor filled her senses and grounded her.
Those men had clearly taken some kind of drug. Geo had said Radovia was the only one experimenting with compounds like that-so they had to be Radovia’s men. But who had sent them?
That night, the storm outside raged. Lillian tossed restlessly in her sleep, her dreams jagged and uneasy.
A sharp crack of lightning lit up the room, and she jolted awake, heart pounding.
The unease clawing at her grew stronger by the second. Reaching for her phone, she dialed Sebastian’s number without a second thought-but the call didn’t go through.
