As she turned, the wineglass before Natalie tipped, spilling its contents across her dress.
“Ah!” Natalie gasped. The fabric was drenched, ruined in an instant-completely inappropriate for such a formal occasion.
“I’m so sorry-truly sorry,” Eda said quickly, her apologies tumbling out.
Natalie frowned, dabbing at the stains, but the effort was useless.
Lillian’s eyes narrowed slightly. That stain would never come out.
“Let me have a maid take you upstairs to change,” Eda suggested smoothly.
Lillian’s brows furrowed. That had been no accident-Eda had tipped the glass deliberately. But what was her real aim?
“No need for the trouble,” Lillian replied coolly. “Just bring another dress here. I’ll take her to the restroom to change p>
She wasn’t about to walk blindly into a trap.
Adeline immediately objected. “How could you change in a restroom? It’s not suitable. The bedroom is much better.” If Lillian didn’t leave the main hall, their plan couldn’t unfold.
Lillian’s gaze sharpened, a cutting smile on her lips. “Oh? Then tell me what’s so inconvenient about the restroom p>
“I-I…” Adeline faltered, her throat tight under Lillian’s icy stare.
Eda quickly stepped in, smoothing things over. “It doesn’t matter where. Adeline only meant the restroom has people coming and going. But it’s fine. I’ll have a dress brought down. You can change wherever you like.” She signaled a servant to fetch one, all the while seething-Adeline had nearly ruined everything again.
When the dress arrived, Lillian escorted Natalie to the restroom herself. After carefully checking the space for hidden devices, she let her friend change.
