Isabelle shot her friend an exasperated glare at the teasing, then turned to pack her things.
Celine laughed, shaking her head, before glancing at Lillian, who was quietly reading nearby. “Lillian, didn’t you bring any luggage?” After all, everyone had prepared special outfits for the competition; yet it looked like she’d only brought a small bag.

“This competition is really important. How can you just wear your everyday clothes? You should at least dress a little more formally. I brought two outfits-our builds are about the same. Why don’t I lend you one?” Celine offered.
Lillian smiled and shook her head. “No need, thank you. I’d rather be comfortable. Besides, the rules don’t say we have to wear anything formal p>
Celine thought it over and nodded. “True, dressing up too much only makes you nervous. Being relaxed might even help you perform better p>
With that, she went back to packing her suitcase.
The entire afternoon was spent in the dorms reviewing; even Eda was uncharacteristically quiet, nose buried in her books.
After dinner, Lillian pulled out her phone and noticed that Sebastian had tried to call her. Since everyone was studying, they’d all kept their phones on silent.
She stepped out onto the balcony and dialed him back; he answered almost instantly.
“All finished,” his deep, magnetic voice rumbled through the line.
Warmth filled her eyes. “Mm. I just had dinner. Everyone was studying this afternoon, so I didn’t notice you’d called p>

Hearing his words, she couldn’t help but think of all the ways he gave her freedom and respect; he never pried into her so-called secrets, even when he must have wanted to know. He chose to trust her instead. How could I not fall for a man like this?
“Did you eat yet?” she asked, changing the subject.
Sebastian chuckled softly. “Don’t worry about me. Just get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow, give it your best p>

When she turned, she found Eda standing behind her. In truth, she’d already sensed her presence during the call, but chose to ignore it.

“You think having a privileged family makes you superior, but all it really means is that you got lucky at birth. It doesn’t make you extraordinary. At your birthday party, I let it slide and gave your father some face. Don’t mistake that for weakness. You should be grateful you had someone to clean up your mess. Eda’s eyes widened in shock. She had never expected her proudest advantage to be stripped of all value in someone else’s eyes. The blow left her reeling.
