Evan gave him a sharp look. “Don’t flatter yourself. I didn’t come to see you-I came to see my granddaughter-in-law. None of these gifts are for you. They’re all for her.” He turned to Lillian as he spoke.

She didn’t live long enough to see the day, but now I can hand them to you.” He pushed the box gently toward her.

Evan waved her protest aside. “I have more than enough keepsakes of hers. To see Sebastian standing here with you-alive, happy-that’s worth more than all the jewelry in the world. She would have been comforted by this too.” And without giving her another chance to refuse, he set the box firmly into her hands.
