“You should go wash up,” Louis said quietly. “Miss Lillian will be fine. She still needs you to care for her, and if you collapse now, who’s going to take care of her then p>
The words seemed to sink in. Without a word, Sebastian turned and headed for his own room.
When he returned, Lillian was already cleaned and tucked into bed, lying peacefully beneath the covers.
Dr. Will was just finishing his examination.
“How is she?” Sebastian asked urgently.
Dr. Will removed his stethoscope and answered, “Her fever is very high. The fainting spell was likely caused by emotional strain. For now, she needs an IV drip. We’ll monitor her tomorrow. If there are no complications, she’ll recover with rest. As for her hands-there are many small cuts. Best to keep them dry for now p>
“Her hands?” Sebastian rushed to the bedside. He finally noticed her swollen, reddened fingers, each marked with tiny wounds he hadn’t seen in the darkness of the cemetery.
“Nothing serious,” Dr. Will reassured him. “She’ll be fine with a little care p>

Once the IV was set and Dr. Will had left, Sebastian sat by her side, his gaze fixed unblinking on her flushed face. Her stillness, her doll-like fragility, tore at him.
“You promised me you’d take care of yourself,” he murmured, brushing her damp hair back. “Yet after just one day apart, you’re like this, Remember what I said? If you break your word, our deal is canceled. Since you’re not answering me, I’ll take your silence as agreement p>
His deep voice filled the quiet room, the only sound beside the steady drip of the IV.

Sebastian took it from him. The instrument-Catherine’s violin-the same one Lillian had taken from the auction. No doubt the wounds on her hands came from burying it.
