She texted Nathaniel that she had already arrived, but he hadn’t replied yet.
Serena went to the ladies’ room and checked herself in the mirror, reapplying her lipstick. As she did, her gaze drifted to the charm bracelet Nathaniel had given her. It dangled beside her jade bangle.
She couldn’t help but smile at how Ali and Bastin’s names were engraved on it.
Finally, she received a text from Nathaniel: [I’m on the way. I had to pick Mom up from her house p>
Serena made her way to the assigned ballroom. She intended to wait outside for Nathaniel or her family before going in, but to her dismay, someone spotted her.

The voice came from Vanessa Holt.
Vanessa stood by the ballroom doors, beaming, eyes flashing with mischief as she held her golden purse with style.
Admittedly, Serena was surprised to see her.
‘I thought Nathaniel wasn’t going to invite her,’ she mused, her eyes locked on Vanessa.
Irritation flared. Serena didn’t want any drama. She turned to leave, but instead, she bumped into an older gentleman.
When Serena looked up, her eyes widened. The man before her was the Vice President of the country, Mr. Graham Whitlock!

She leaned back, then stepped closer to Serena. “It looks like the Jade of Promise from the Ellison family. Dear child, are you part of the Ellison family p>
“The Ellison family?” Vanessa’s brows knit together.
“Yes, the Ellison family,” the woman explained. “They’re the oldest family in Novara Isles. Even though it’s a small island nation, the Ellisons own nearly a quarter of its land. They’re among the most affluent families there p>
She gestured toward Serena’s wrist. “What she’s wearing looks like one of their heirlooms p>
For a moment, Vanessa paled, then she laughed, loud.
“Serena?” Vanessa scoffed. “Wearing a wealthy family’s heirloom”
