The bowl in my hand feels heavier now that every set of eyes in this damned room is glued to it. Camilla freezes, her face losing that smug pink tint she’s shown me earlier. Her hands twitch on the table, it’s as though she’s deciding whether to run
or scream.
Maybe both.
I lift the bowl a little higher.
“Go on,” I say, voice sweet enough to rot teeth. “You were about to eat it anyway, right p>
Her throat bobs. She takes a tiny step back though the soup just turned into a bomb.
Well, technically, it can kill.
“What’s wrong?” I tilt my head. “Suddenly not hungry? You were so loud about wanting everyone to eat five minutes ago p>
A few elders cough awkwardly. The envoy, Beta Cassian looks as though he wants to disappear into his chair.
Camilla’s lips part, but nothing comes out. She’s pale. My hearts dance with awe. Pathetic.
I smile wider and offer her the soup. “Drink, Luna p>
“Stop calling me that!” she snaps and her voice cracks. I stop the smirk from forming on my lips. “I’m not–this is ridiculous! I don’t have to justify anything to p>
“To what?” I cut in. “The girl who caught you p>
I blink, slow and taunting her even more. “You sure as hell act like it p>
Gasps ripple through the room. Alaric’s crimson eyes narrow with wicked interest, it’s as if he’s watching the best show of his century.
His gaze drops to my mouth, then back to my eyes.
I swear he’s enjoying the hell out of this.

Camilla stammers for a second, losing the last bit of her composure. She shoves the bowl back toward me. “If anyone should drink it, it’s her.Ask her again!” She points at Rosaline like she’s disposable furniture. “She made it p>
Rosaline flinches so hard the spoon rattles in the bowl.
“Rosaline?” I echo, turning to the shaking girl. Her knees are wobbling so violently I almost feel bad. Almost.
“Your Luna wants you to have a sip p>
“S–Sorin, p–please-” Her eyes fill with tears. She looks at Camilla again, begging silently. Her master she’s so loyal about.
Camilla doesn’t even look at her.
Of course she doesn’t.
“Don’t look at me,” Camilla snaps. “You made the soup. Take responsibility p>
My jaw tightens.

Rosaline’s lip trembles, and she brings the bowl closer. Her hands shake so violently that a drop spills onto her wrist. She winces like it burns.

She startles. “Y–yes p>
“Just a sip.” I whisper, pretending not to see her panic, pretending not to see Camilla digging her nails into her own palm under the table.
Rosaline shuts her eyes and lifts the bowl. My heartbeat is way too loud as I stare at her with unblinking eyes.
The hall goes dead silent.
Her lips touch the surface. A tiny sip. There’s barely anything on her mouth.
She lowers the bowl before breathing and looks around. Nothing happens.
“See! You sure are stupid for accusing me!” Camilla scoffs loudly.

I look down at the bowl she’s holding. Am I actually wrong? Maybe the poison lost potency. Maybe-
Rosaline coughs.

Her eyes bulge.
Before we knew it, she drops the bowl and it shatters against the marble floor.
“Rosaline?” Marg gasps.
The girl crumples forward like a puppet with cut strings. Her palms smack the floor, and she coughs again–harder–and dark red splatters across the pristine white tiles.
Several people scream. Chairs scrape back violently.
Alaric doesn’t do anything however, She looks at the scene still.
But his attention isn’t on Rosaline.
It’s on me.
His eyes lock onto mine, wild and molten, my little trap just lit something in him on fire.
I look back, letting one corner of my mouth lift.
