Chapter 144

I had to deal with other pack matters for the rest of the day and then I picked the

kids up from school and we went home to the packhouse.

I made them their afternoon snacks and they ate them sitting outside on the patio furniture like they always did.

I sat out there with them, watching people walk past and the kids loved watching the wolves running through the forest while they were on patrol.

I had the roster in my hand so I could see who was on patrol tonight around the

south border so I knew who I had to get rid of and how many of them.

I knew that Ezra wouldn’t be back tonight. He’s too busy investigating what happened at the Moon Howlers pack and then he has to report to the werewolf council.

That always took a couple of days because the council were always assholes who wanted every little bit of information. Even if we didn’t have it. They always insisted on having more.

We played around in the yard for a while, kicking a soccer ball around before we finally went inside and Jane started getting the kids in the bath and I went to start making dinner.

We all sat down together to eat but the whole time I had this meeting tonight on my mind.

I had to really concentrate to hear what the kids were saying to me and I could tell that Jane was looking at me funny. She knew that I was really distracted as well.

So after dinner I let the kids watch a bit of TV while I was cleaning the kitchen and doing the dishes.

I was interrupted by my phone ringing though.

“Hello.” I answered.

“Hey baby. It’s me.” Ezra said.

“Hi. How’s it going?” I asked.

“Horribly. We’re still at the pack taking photo evidence of the carnage. It’s really bad here.” He said.

“So, the hunters are stepping up their game?” I asked.

“Yeah. And we don’t even know how to find them.” He said.

“Every pack in the country knows that the hunters are taking packs out one at a time. Why aren’t they doing anything to protect themselves?” I asked.

“The only thing they can do at the moment is leave their packs. To retreat and go into hiding. And a lot of them won’t do that.” He said.

“Well, what if they went into hiding, but we made sure that the hunters knew where they were?” I asked.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, they could come to this pack. We’ve got plenty of room. There are dozens of empty houses that we’ve built and no one has moved into them yet. We could let a couple of families stay in one house each. Or there are the properties that we own

in the human cities. I mean, they will have to be careful about shifting and stuff like that, but I don’t think the hunters will be looking for them among humans.” I suggested.

“That’s actually not a bad idea. I’ll bring it up to the werewolf council. They’re probably going to keep for a couple of days with what they call a debriefing of what I’ve seen at this pack. But without these photos, I don’t think they would believe it.” He said.

“I can imagine.” I said.

“Don’t worry. We’ll sort this out.” He said.

When I got off the phone I went to watch TV with the kids for a little bit before I turned the TV off and told them that it was time for bed.

Jane and I got them all upstairs and we got them into bed and I had to read to the twins and then read to Octavia until they all fell asleep.

Jane said that she was going to go to bed now. She was pretty exhausted so I said that was fine. She was just down the hall from the kids and I went into my room.

I sat at my desk looking around on my computer for any sort of information but there was nothing around.

I got changed into clothes that were

more appropriate for walking

through the forest at night and when

I was sure the coast was clearts, Shuck out of my room and down the

stairs and out the front door.

I got to the south side of the territory and I mind linked the patrols that it looked like there was a little activity happening at the north border. I need them there now.

So they didn’t argue, they just did as they were ordered to by their superior. And I would take the fall for it if Ezra found out.

But once they were gone, I was able to cross the border and I kept walking into the forest until I was sure that I was far enough away that no one could hear us talking.

I stopped walking and started looking around, but pretty soon I heard footsteps behind me so I drew my claws and I turned around to see a young man standing there.

He had his hands up in surrender, letting me know that he wasn’t going to hurt me but I didn’t know who the hell he was. I’d never seen him again.

“Who are you and what the hell do you know about Savannah?” I asked.

He looked really nervous at first. Like he didn’t know what to say or do and he kept staring at my claws, because they were the only things that changed when I turned to face him.

“My name is Jason. I work with Lilly.” He said.

“What?” I asked, confused.

“I mean Savannah. They changed her name to Lilly after they took ker from you. Anyway, she needs your help but she’s sure that she’s human and she’s been trained to kil werewolves.” He explained

“How do you know who she really is?” I asked.

“Because I broke into our Captain’s office and found everything I could on Lilly. Her

file that in the cabinet, but the private one that he keeps in his desk.” Jason said.

“The one that says she was taken from me when she was a baby?” I asked. “Yeah.”

“Have you told her any of this?” I asked.

“No. She can’t handle this information right now. Listen, she does need your help.”

“What’s going on? What’s wrong? What’s happening to her?”

Shes

“Well, she’s living on an army base and she’s been trained as a warrior since she was able to walk never had parents and her trainer isn’t treating her right.” He said.

“What the hell does that mean?” I asked, taking a step closer to him.

“It means that we need to find a way to convince her that she’s a werewolf. And we

need to do it now before something really bad happens to her.” Jason said.

I looked him up and down for a moment, realizing that he was coming to me for help after they were trying to kill us.

“You’re in love with her.” I said.
