Ladd, with a little help from the butler, watched that press conference three times. By the end, he was looking at Scott with a mix of disappointment and expectation.
“Look at your brother,” he said, shaking his head. “He’s already married and still hasn’t managed to win his wife over. Useless, honestly p>
Scott, as always, stuck to his rule of never speaking during meals. He ate with his usual quiet poise, occasionally placing a piece of food on Garth’s plate, ignoring his father completely.
But it was only a matter of time before the conversation turned to him.
Ladd shot Scott another look, this time with even less patience. “You’re even worse than Latham p>
“At least he has a wife,” Ladd grumbled under his breath, “and you don’t even have a girlfriend p>
Garth’s eyes sparkled. He hadn’t forgotten about Mamie.
“Grandpa, Aunt Dorothea knows a lady who’s probably single,” he blurted out.
Scott glanced at him, cool and calm. “Who said she’s single p>
Garth’s cheeks turned red. He fidgeted, then mumbled, “I guessed p>

Garth perked up, not giving up so easily. “Dad, how do you know? What if Mamie really is single p>
Scott narrowed his eyes, giving Garth a look that said, drop it. “Didn’t you see the ring on Mamie’s finger p>
Garth fell quiet. He was only six. Details like that were way above his pay grade.
Scott watched as Garth zipped his lips and then caught his father’s suspicious stare. Ladd wasn’t some clueless kid. Since when did Scott care about what jewelry a woman wore?

“I’m done eating. You two take your time. I have work to finish in my room p>
Scott left, looking a little too eager to escape. As soon as he was gone, Ladd crooked a finger at Garth.

Just hearing the name made Garth light up.
“Grandpa, she looks a lot like

I saw it once Mamie looks just like
her

That night, Ladd picked up the phone and called Dorothea.
He didn’t get the answer he hoped for. Not only did Mamie have a boyfriend, they were already talking about marriage.
