Chapter 158
After giving his instructions, Latham headed out.
Dorothea hadn’t slept well at all. She kept waking up in the middle of the night to check on Mamie. Now, she stretched, thinking she’d finally go back to her room and catch a nap, when her phone started ringing. It was Mr. Jared.
“Dorothea, it’s Jared. Are you taking a break right now p>
At the reunion, Dorothea had shared her new number with him.
“Hi, Mr. Jared. Not yet. I just finished lunch. Is there something you need p>
Jared let out a soft laugh. “No, nothing urgent. I just wanted to check in. Some people at the reunion might have said things that weren’t so nice. I hope you didn’t take any of that to heart p>
“I’m actually relieved,” he continued. “I used to worry about you, but now, seeing how well you’re doing, I’m genuinely happy for you p>
Dorothea couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you, Mr. Jared. Back then, you really took care of us. Whether it was schoolwork or life stuff, you always had our backs. I appreciate it, really p>
“As for the mean comments, I don’t care anymore. Maybe I used to. I’d lie awake at night, thinking about every little thing people said behind my back. But I’ve grown up p>
“That’s good to hear,” Jared said, a note of relief in his voice. “If you don’t care, no one can hurt you p>
“Yeah. And… I’m getting married. The hotel is actually my dad’s. My uncle used to run it, but I just took over a few months ago. The wedding’s at the end of next month. And my fiancé is someone you know too-one of your old students p>
“Really? Who is it?” Jared sounded genuinely surprised.
“Latham. Do you remember him p>
Jared actually laughed. “Latham? Of course I remember! That kid was always tip to something. He’d fall

“At one point, people thought he was cheating, so he went and got a zero on purpose just to mess with me. Honestly, getting a zero is probably harder than getting everything right p>
“Back then, Albert was the responsible one, and Latham was the wild card. He kept me on my toes every single day p>
Even though he sounded like he was complaining, Dorothea could hear the fondness in Mr. Jared’s voice.
“But Latham was really talented.
Everyone said he and Albert were like the school’s top student and the school’s troublemaker, but honestly, Latham a talent was even ahead of Albert’s p>
Jared paused, then said, “I can’t believe you’re marrying him. That’s honestly great.e’s not a bad guy. Do you remember during freshman orientation, when you fainted because of low blood sugar p>
“I was so worried. The school nurse was out that day, but I ran into Latham, and he
helped me get you to the hospital p>
“Who would’ve thought you two would end up together p>
Dorothea remembered fainting that year, but she never knew it was Latham who helped her. She’d always assumed it was p>
“So, the person who took me to the hospital was Latham?” she asked quietly.
Jared chuckled, warm and proud. “Yep. Who would have thought? I guess that makes me your matchmaker, doesn’t it p>
“This is wonderful. I’ll be at your wedding for sure. And if Latham ever gives you a hard time, just let me know. I’ll set him straight p>
Dorothea felt a bit dazed, listening to Jared repeat how happy he was for her.
All this time, she’d thought it was Albert who helped her. Turns out, it was Latham all along.
