The next day, Dorothea brought up the event to Mamie in a casual way, expecting at least a little hesitation. Instead, Mamie barely blinked before saying yes.
“Don’t feel like you have to agree just because I’m your boss,” Dorothea said, a little worried Mamie might feel pressured. “If you don’t want to go, it’s totally fine to say no p>
Mamie grinned. “No way. Whether it’s a boss or my parents, nobody can make me do something I don’t want to do p>
“Latham did me a small favor recently, and I actually really like kids. Let me treat everyone to dinner afterward, okay p>
To be honest, Mamie just didn’t want to have dinner with Scott alone. She’d been trying to find a good excuse to invite Dorothea and her husband out together, and now here was the perfect opportunity.
Dorothea laughed. “That’s perfect. We’re all free that night. Seriously, keep it casual. No need to make it a big deal p>
Mamie’s face lit up. “Great, see you tomorrow. I’ve got to get back to work p>
Dorothea sent Latham a quick message, letting him know so Garth could relax.
When the news reached Garth, he was over the moon. He spent ages changing in and out of different outfits before finally picking a little tuxedo. “Grandpa, do I look good in this p>
Ladd looked at the suit stretched a bit tight across Garth’s stomach and sighed to himself. The kid could stand to lose a few pounds.
But Ladd would never spoil the mood. “You look amazing. You’ll be the star of the show p>

One of them liked to hype things up, and the other took every word to heart. Once his outfit was settled, Garth moved on to his homemade cheering signs. “Can you help me color this part? I want to make another one too p>
The nanny eyed the flashy sign on the lawn and felt a bit anxious. Was Garth seriously planning to make Ladd hold this thing tomorrow? It looked kind of embarrassing.
“Sure, I’ll help you color it. But honestly, I think one is enough p>

“It’s plenty. Or maybe just make a couple of small ones p>
Garth thought about it. Latham didn’t seem like the type who’d wave a sign around
for him anyway. One should be enough.

Garth was pretty easy to convince. The nanny let out a long breath of relief. Those two men owed her a thank you.

Meanwhile, Latham was eyeing Scott the whole time. Scott started to get uncomfortable under the stare and frowned, “Why are you looking at me like that?
Latham grinned. “Oh, nothing. It’s just… you seem even more bummed than Garth about someone running late p>
Scott’s frown deepened. “Just don’t say anything weird when she gets here. Don’t make her feel awkward p>
Latham rolled his eyes. Like inviting her to Garth’s talent show on a weekend wasn’t already a lot to ask?
