Dorothea didn’t think much of it. She couldn’t go around getting jealous every time a woman showed up near Latham. That would just be exhausting.
“Is she by herself? We could invite her to eat with us,” Dorothea offered, her tone easy.
Latham looked a little surprised. “I think she’s meeting up with some friends. Maybe next time. We really should take her out for a proper meal. You and me, together p>
Dorothea smiled. He always knew exactly where to draw the line, never getting too close, never too distant, just the right amount of space between him and other
women.
Latham leaned in close, his breath warm against her ear. “Babe, I honestly thought you’d be jealous p>
Dorothea felt her cheeks heat up. She gave him a playful shove. “Don’t start. I’m not that petty p>
Mamie was back to her regular work routine. Even after Adonis returned from abroad, she only dropped by occasionally.
She figured she wouldn’t have to deal with Scott anymore. But then, after work, her phone rang and his name popped up.
“Sorry to bother you, Mamie. Garth’s sick. He’s been fussing and keeps asking to see you. If you’re free, could you come to the hospital with me p>
Garth? Sick?
He was always so round and chubby, bouncing around like nothing could ever bring him down. How did he end up in the hospital?
Mamie didn’t hesitate. “Send me the hospital address. I’ll head over right now p>
“Thank you. Really. Sorry for the trouble p>
When Mamie walked into the hospital room and saw Garth lying in bed with an IV in his arm, her heart squeezed.
“Daddy, you lied. Mamie’s not here!” Garth pouted, a fever patch stuck to his forehead.
Scott looked as calm as ever. “Garth, I didn’t lie p>
A nurse came over, prepping a shot. “Okay, let’s get your hand ready p>
“No, I don’t want a shot! No!” Garth started wriggling away, little body tensed up.
Scott’s brows drew together. “Garth, stop fussing p>
At that moment, Mamie knocked on the door. “Garth, I’m here. I came to see you p>
“Mamie!” In an instant, Garth turned into the sweetest, most cooperative kid. “Nurse, you can do it now p>
The nurse just stared for a second, speechless.
Mamie smiled and reached for
Garth’s other hand. “Hey, Garth, just
look at me. It won’t hurt if you’re
brave p>
The nurse glanced up at her, then quickly slid the needle into the vein on his chubby hand. “All done. Your mom really knows how to handle you. We’ve tried everything and you still wouldn’t let us do it p>
Mamie froze for just a moment, then quickly corrected her. “I’m not his mom p>
“Oh, sorry,” the nurse said, a little embarrassed. “You two just look so much alike. Sorry, my mistake p>
Did they look alike?
Mamie glanced over at Garth’s pale little face. Now that she thought about it, their eyes were kind of similar.
But plenty of people had the same kind of eyes, right?
Garth piped up right away. “See, Mamie? We totally look like mom and son p>
Scott cut in, his voice a bit cool. “Alright, that’s enough. Be good and take your medicine. No more complaining p>
Garth stuck out his lower lip, looking completely put out.
Scott barely looked at him. Instead, he turned to Mamie. “Have you eaten yet? Thanks for coming out tonight. The nanny brought over some food. Want to have some with us p>
