Mamie hurried into Dorothea’s office, barely pausing before blurting out, “Dorothea, do you have the results p>
Without a word, Dorothea handed her a folder, letting Mamie open it and read for herself.
Mamie slid out the papers. The first thing she saw was her mother’s diagnosis. Severe blockages in multiple coronary arteries had caused a massive heart attack, and her mom couldn’t have bypass surgery. Dangerous arrhythmias kept coming back, so the only real hope was a heart transplant.
She remembered the diagnosis. She’d only been nineteen.
In the doctor’s notes, she saw a line that made her heart skip. The patient’s daughter said there was a suitable heart for transplant but it had to happen quickly.
Mamie’s mind jumped to Vince’s message. So back then, he must have been the one offering a heart for her mom.
But at the end of the record, something new caught her eye. A few months later, the patient’s daughter came back and said the transplant plan had changed. They needed to look for another donor. Within a week, her mother died from a fall.
Her mother died from a fall? The words didn’t make sense at first, then settled into her chest like a stone.
She pulled out the next document. This one explained her dad’s death. It was really a car accident. A truck driver fell asleep at the wheel, and a month later, Mamie’s father was gone, too.
“The hospital sealed this file. That’s probably why you couldn’t find anything when you searched,” Dorothea said quietly.
That explained a lot, but it didn’t answer everything. Why would the hospital hide these records?
Mamie’s head spun with questions. Besides her old, pre-amnesia self, she realized someone else probably knew the truth. She’d have to go to Josh and Claire.

Dorothea watched her, worry creasing her brow. “Is there anything else I can help you look into p>
Mamie shook her head. “No, thank you. I appreciate it p>

She almost asked Dorothea to dig into Vince for her, but if she did, Scott would definitely find out. If Scott realized she was investigating, he’d probably guess her memory was coming back She didn’t want him suspecting anything. Playing clueless was the only way to keep the fragile peace between them.
Mamie took the rest of the afternoon off and headed straight for their apartment. As she pulled into the garage, she spotted Adonis just getting home.

He looked up, his expression softening when he saw her. “Hey, you’re back. You don’t look so good. Are you feeling okay p>
Mamie shook her head, then got right to the point. “Adonis, I know how my parents died. So who was really responsible for my mom’s fall? You know, don’t you?” Adonis froze.
“Mamie, did your memory come back p>
“Not completely, but I’m close. Adonis, I deserve to know the truth about my parents.
I don’t want to finally remember everything and end up resenting you for keeping this from me p>
Adonis’s face darkened. He let out a long breath. “Alright. Since you’re going to find out anyway, I’ll tell you p>
