Mr. Zane falters for a second. Then he recovers:

He sounds so sure of himself.
Like he thinks I’ll just back down after hearing his little speech.

His tone stays professional, but there’s a flicker of contempt in his eyes

Gemma points at me, her voice shaking with rage:

By then, a tall figure strides into the room-a man in a sharp suit, briefcase in hand.
Mr. Zane’s frown melts into shock. He nearly trips over his words:
“You’re Barrett Lyle, aren’t you? I’ve attended your lectures. Mr. Hayes must have sent you to help with this case. It’s an honor to work with you p>
Gemma’s eyes immediately light up.
She rushes over and grabs his sleeve:
“You’re here just in time! That psycho’s trying to kill my son. Make her stop p>
Then she whirls on me, screaming:
“Mr. Lyle’s here now. Your money means nothing. If you don’t stop, he’ll get you the death penalty p>
But Barrett just yanks his sleeve out of her grip, his face twisted in disgust.
“Let go. You’re filthy p>
Gemma freezes. Then Barrett sneers: “So you’re Hayes’ mistress. God, you’re so ugly p>
“What the hell are you talking about p>
Barrett ignores her and walks straight to me.
He glances at Blaze-still writhing on the floor-and asks casually:
“Tired yet? Want me to take over p>

Mr. Zane looks between Gemma and Barrett, completely lost.

Barrett turns and smirks at him. “Him? A puppet? He doesn’t have the authority to hire me p>
Everyone in the room-Mr. Zane, the teachers, the staff-stares at me in shock.
Someone’s voice trembles as they ask: “Who is she p>
The sound of footsteps echoes down the hall.
Then Hayes walks in with the principal, mid-conversation, a fake smile plastered on his face:
“Blaze, didn’t you tell your mom to hurry up so we could go eat? It’s been half an hour. What’s taking so long? Just throw some cash at the poor garbage and move on. How hard is that p>
“What the-why is there so much cash p>
“Blaze?! What happened to you? Who did this p>
I turn around slowly: “Welcome here. Haye p>
His mouth falls open. No words come out.
Gemma throws herself into his arms, mascara running down her face: “Honey, save our son! And Barrett won’t listen to me-I want him fired p>
Hayes’ lips move but nothing comes out. Then something clicks. His face drains of color as he looks at me:
“The girl Blaze hit… was Raven p>
I hold the bat and walk toward him. His eyes search my face, like he’s praying I’ll say no.
“Luna, tell me-please p>
I stop in front of him. “I’m telling you NOW p>
Then I swing the bat straight into his arm. His face goes white. A strangled sound escapes his throat.
Three days ago, I told Hayes our daughter had been hit by a car and was barely alive.
What did he say?
“Don’t worry p>
Said he had an urgent overseas business deal he couldn’t miss.
A “media situation” he needed to handle.
I was drowning in grief. I hadn’t slept in days. I didn’t have the energy to question him.
But now it all makes sense.
