Five years later, I became the youngest partner in the firm’s history.
I used my earnings to buy Clara and Miles a huge house.
The day they moved in, Clara ran her fingers along the clean windows, tears streaming down her face.

Miles became a successful architect. Our little family was thriving.
I thought the past was behind me.
I thought that woman’s name would only exist in my nightmares.
Until the day I got a call from the police back in my hometown.
“Ms. Riley Anson? This is Officer Martinez. We’re calling to inform you that your biological mother has been released from prison p>
My heart sank.
“After her release, she’s been trying to locate you. We’re required by law to notify you p>
“I have no relationship with that woman,” I said coldly.
“We understand. We’re just fulfilling our legal obligation. However, we believe she may have already tracked you down through unofficial
channels p>
I hung up and stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the city lights below. My hands were ice-cold.
Ten years.
And that woman was still haunting me.
Miles noticed something was wrong.

“I’m fine.” I shook my head. I didn’t want them to worry.
But I knew-our peaceful life was over.
Sure enough, a few days later, a haggard, filthy woman appeared outside my office building.
Her hair was greasy and gray, pulled back in a messy bun. She looked like she’d aged thirty years in ten-hunched over, skin like old leather, clothes that hadn’t been washed in weeks.
But those eyes-greedy, calculating-I’d recognize them anywhere.

She blocked my path.
“Riley…? It’s me. Your mom p>
Her voice was hoarse, dripping with false sweetness.
“I don’t know you p>
I tried to walk past her, but she grabbed my arm with shocking strength.
“Don’t go! I’ve been looking everywhere for you! I thought about you every single day for ten years p>
“Let go p>
“NO! You’re my daughter! You owe me! Look at me-I’m a wreck because of YOU! If I hadn’t been trying to provide for you, I never would’ve run those scams! I never would’ve gone to prison p>
She started wailing, just like she used to do at those intersections all those years ago.
People started gathering. Whispering. Judging.
“What’s wrong with that girl? Why is she being so cold to her own mother p>
“She’s dressed so nice, but her heart’s made of stone p>
I stared at her twisted, lying face, my whole body trembling with rage.
Fine. You want to put on a show?

I pulled out my phone and hit record.
“Ma’am, you claim to be my mother. So tell me-how many times did I break bones as a child p>
She froze.
“Do you remember how both my legs got broken p>
“Do you remember how you sold me to a human trafficker p>
My voice was calm, but every word hit like a hammer.
Hearing this, her face instantly went pale.

“Never?” I gave her a cold smile. “Good. Because the trafficker you sold me to is getting out soon too. Want me to arrange a little reunion p>
She completely lost it.
She hadn’t expected the terrified little girl she used to control to turn into this.

“I want you to stay away from me. Otherwise, I won’t hesitate to have you arrested again-this time for harassment and defamation p>

I turned and walked away, ignoring her curses behind me.
When I got home, Clara and Miles had already heard.
