Evelyn’s POV
I’d just finished reviewing Leon’s medical reports.His bodily functions appeared normal, but he still wouldn’t wake.
I’d already arranged for my assistant to transfer him to the Evelink Biosciences lab, where the world’s most advanced equipment and medical talent awaited.
Tomorrow, my team would conduct comprehensive examinations on Leon. Once the data reports came in, I’d need to make a personal visit. Two days minimum, perhaps a week.
I could bring Alexis to stay with me, but Rowan and Rhys needed to attend school p>
Perhaps during a holiday break? But before handling that issue, I needed to repay a debt first.
Rowan and Rhys burst into the guest room the moment they returned from school. Their eyes lit up at the sight of Calvin working.
Rhys threw himself into Calvin’s arms. “Dad, are you feeling any better p>
Calvin stayed in the guest room talking with them. At dinner time, the boys took his hands and led him to the dining room.
The smell of food filled the hallway. My sons, hungry after school, perked up instantly.
“Mom! Did you make the special soup again?” Rowan called out.
I came from the kitchen smiling. “Don’t you like it p>

Since they got better, I’d been making these healing broths—good medicine hidden in good food. The boys drank them happily.
Calvin hadn’t known about the soups. But Rowan and Rhys had grown stronger, getting sick less often. Maybe I was finally being the mother they needed.
Rhys pushed his bowl toward Calvin. “Dad, Mom says this helps you get better. Take mine p>
Calvin’s hard face softened. He stroked Rhys’s head. “This is your special soup from Mom. You drink it p>
I walked in with Alexis and saw them. Calvin’s dark eyes met mine, giving nothing away.
Eating with him felt wrong. I kept my face blank and focused on the children, acting like he wasn’t there. Dinner was oddly peaceful,the kids talked while we stayed quiet.
When he left the next morning, I could finally breathe.
After dropping the children off at school and returning home, I treated myself to a rare carefully applied makeup session and changed into more formal attire. I drove alone to the New City Tower.
The revolving restaurant on the top floor was renowned throughout Ravenshade, frequented by corporate CEOs, industry elites, and wealthy heirs.
Keith Frost had already arrived when I got there. His sister Helena had been my college roommate and had once helped me enormously.We’d stayed in touch regularly until I left three years ago.
I still remembered that day in the isolation ward. The protective gear felt suffocating as I watched Helena through the glass,her body ravaged by the virus she’d accidentally contracted in her lab.
“Eve Her voice was weak through the intercom. “My research… the vaccine isn’t ready p>
I pressed my gloved hand against the glass. After I’d left medicine for marriage, she’d continued our work.
“My brother,” she whispered. “He’s all I have. So young, so reckless p>
The monitors beeped steadily in the background.
“Promise me,” her eyes locked with mine, desperate. “Promise you’ll look after Keith when I’m gone. He needs someone to guide him p>
I nodded, tears blurring my vision. “I promise p>
That was why I was here today. Not for Keith, but for the promise I made to Helena as she slipped away, the virus taking her before we found a cure.
Keith knew about this promise.
Repaying this debt was why I was here today.
Keith looked haggard, his cheeks hollow—clearly he hadn’t properly rested in days. When he saw me, his eyes filled with desperate hope as though I were his last chance.
“Evie, please! I’m begging you to help me!” he pleaded.”I know you have connections with Evelink Biosciences. Please help me save someone p>
As he mentioned this person, his eyes filled with regret and bitterness.
After hearing his story, I asked quietly.”Are you sure she wants to wake up?The mate you betrayed tried to die rather than stay with you p>
His mate Lynn had tried to kill herself after catching him with another woman. She survived, but now lay in a coma.
Keith’s face went white. He slumped in his chair, lost.
“Evie, I just want her to live,” he whispered.
I looked at Helena’s brilliant little brother, the one she’d always praised. Now just another cheater.
“If you knew she was fragile, why did you cheat p>
“I Keith had nothing to say.
Despite being Helena’s brother, I felt only cold contempt for him.
“I’ll help her. For your sister, not you p>
Keith’s eyes lit up. He nodded fast. “Thank you, Evie p>
“After this, we’re done. Don’t contact me again p>
I stood to leave. Keith jumped up.
“How will I know if she wakes? Can I stay with her?” His voice shook with worry.
I paused and looked back at the deep love for the girl he’d hurt reflected in his eyes, then gave a soft, derisive snort. Such belated affection was worthless.
“If she dies, you’ll hear from us,” I said flatly.
“If you don’t, she’s alive but doesn’t want to see you. You know why p>
I couldn’t believe this was Helena’s brother.
Keith chased me to the elevator, still hoping. As if he could fix what he’d destroyed.
He only knew I had connections to Evelink Biosciences, not that I was its founder. He wanted to use me to get updates about his beloved.
He grabbed my arm, begging desperately.
“Evie, for old times’ sake, please don’t block my number. I promise I won’t bother you two again p>
“Just give me occasional updates. That would be enough for me p>
“I truly love her.
He just needed to know when she would wake up, when she’d be discharged. Then he’d have a chance to prove himself, to reform, to not repeat his mistakes.
Before I could answer, the elevator doors opened.
Calvin’s eyes locked onto Keith’s grip on my arm. The temperature seemed to drop around us.
He stood there in his black suit, power radiating from every inch. As he moved toward us, his presence filled the space, suffocating in its intensity.
“Move,” he commanded, his Alpha voice resonating with authority. The word wasn’t a request—it was an order that demanded immediate submission.
