Clara’s POV
When I heard those two little ingrates,Rowan and Rhys, had been rushed to the hospital, I couldn’t have been more delighted.
For three years, I’ve showered them with affection and care.Yet the moment their birth mother returned, they completely forgot about me. How typical. They left me no choice but to take drastic measures. With them gone, Calvin would have no remaining connection to that Evelyn woman. As for children? Once Calvin and I marry, I can give him plenty more. Better ones.
I rushed to the hospital, my face carefully arranged into a mask of concern. As the twins were wheeled out of the emergency room, I approached with my practiced tears ready to fall, only to have Evelyn block my path.
“Your perfume is too strong,” she said, her nose wrinkling with distaste. “It will irritate their respiratory system p>
What nonsense. Those little brats might as well die quickly. But Calvin was watching, so I had no choice but to agree to leave.
I nodded tearfully, but as I turned to go, I shot Evelyn a venomous glare—and found her staring back at me with cold, piercing eyes. A chill ran through me. Did she suspect something? Could she possibly know?
The moment I stepped into the elevator, I established a mind-link with Rocco, my father’s most skilled warrior and assassin.
“Rocco, there’s no way they can trace this back to us, right?” I asked, unable to keep the anxiety from my thoughts.
“Relax,” his gruff voice answered in my head. “I was meticulous. Unless they have supernatural detection powers, they won’t find a trail leading to me p>
His confidence eased my worry.I should have known better than to doubt him,Rocco had been eliminating problems for the Calypso Pack for decades.
Days passed without news of the twins’ deaths.
I paced around my packhouse, growing increasingly agitated. How much poison did it take to kill two small children? I’d instructed Rocco to use enough to ensure their organs would fail within days.
Then my world began to crumble.
One by one, the Calypso Pack’s businesses were shut down by police raids. Someone had told the authorities about our organ selling, drug deals, and murder contracts. Our real company, Summit Industries, was now being checked and investigated.
When the Alpha Council investigators arrived without warning at our packhouse, I knew we were in serious trouble. My parents were taken away for questioning, with no visitors or contact allowed. The Council’s special interrogation chambers were built to block mind-links, so I couldn’t reach either of them no matter how hard I tried.
All pack assets were frozen. Our human world companies faced sudden market crashes that made stock prices drop. I knew someone was taking us down step by step. They had given the Alpha Council all the proof they needed to break apart the Calypso Pack.
In my rage, I destroyed everything in my bedroom, smashing vases and ripping paintings from walls. Standing before my cracked mirror, I stared at my reflection.
I was supposed to be untouchable! Everyone thought I was Calvin Wolfe’s woman, who would dare attack the Calypso Pack?
There was only one answer—Evelyn Blackwell.
That car accident should have killed her and that sickly daughter of hers. If they had died as planned, she wouldn’t have been able to turn her attention to the twins. This was all her fault!
“Evelyn Blackwell,” I snarled at my reflection, “I will destroy you if it’s the last thing I do p>
With no other options, I frantically called Calvin. He didn’t answer,his beta informed me he was on a business flight. I demanded to know his arrival time and waited, planning my approach carefully.
When I finally reached Calvin by phone after he landed, my voice was thick with tears.
“Calvin, please,” I begged. “The Alpha Council has taken my parents. They won’t let me see them or speak to them p>
His voice remained cold. “What are they being questioned about p>
“I don’t know! Some ridiculous accusations about illegal activities. You know my father, he’s always been strict about following pack law.” The lie came easily.
“And the businesses?” he asked flatly.
“Everything’s frozen. Summit Industries is crashing. Someone’s orchestrating this, it has to be her!” I couldn’t hide my anger.
Calvin’s voice sharpened. “Her p>
“Evelyn,” I spat. “Who else has the motive? She’s trying to destroy me to get back at you p>
There was a long pause. “I can look into stabilizing Summit Industries temporarily,” he finally said. “But I can’t interfere with an Alpha Council investigation without knowing what they’re investigating p>
“That’s not enough!” I cried desperately. “My parents could be sentenced to exile or worse! You have the influence to help them p>
“Clara,” his voice turned cold, “I need to know what the Council found before I can help. I won’t blindly defend potential crimes against pack law p>
I felt panic rising in my chest. If the Council had evidence of what we’d really been doing… if they knew about the twins p>
“Please, Calvin,” I whispered. “We’ve known each other for so long, and our packs have always been friendly. Can’t you help us p>
His reply was measured and final. “I can only help protect your pack’s charitable assets. Nothing more p>
