Chapter 106
Evelyn’s POV
I made a quiet hand signal to my security team. One immediately took control of Alexis’s stroller while the other moved closer to me. I knew other guards were already moving into position around the area.
The woman walked over with an exaggerated pregnant waddle, one hand supporting her lower back and the other resting on her “baby bump p>
“Excuse me,” she called out in that sickeningly sweet voice. “I couldn’t help noticing that our eyes look so similar p>
When she got closer, I was hit by the strong smell of rose perfume, which was clearly meant to hide her natural scent.
I remembered Beta Zeon mentioning that Clara had gotten extensive cosmetic surgery after some “accident” overseas.
Was this person in front of me Clara?
Looking at her now, I could see all the changes. Her eyes had been changed to look like mine, her breasts were much larger, and her waist was smaller.
I had to give her credit for committing to the physical transformation, even though it must have been incredibly painful to go through multiple surgeries.
“Yes, they do look somewhat similar,” I said, keeping my face blank.
Clara was obviously waiting for me to ask about her pregnancy, but I deliberately didn’t show any interest. I could see frustration cross her face.
“What a beautiful daughter you have,” she said, bending down slightly to look at Alexis, who was now half asleep in her stroller.
Without waiting for me to respond, Clara rubbed her belly lovingly. “I’m just starting my motherhood journey. I worry about the baby all the time, barely eating or sleeping. Thankfully, the father is incredibly supportive p>
The happiness in her eyes looked so real that anyone else might have believed it.
“In fact,” she continued, pointing toward the huge Wolfe Haven International tower, “the baby’s father works right over there. Maybe you know him p>
She spoke slowly on purpose, emphasizing each word.
“His name is Calvin Wolfe. Do you know him p>
I remembered the last of those anonymous photos.
It seemed to be taken at the hospital obstetrics department.
The Calvin in that photo looked very different from usual.
The man was leaning lazily against the wall in the corridor opposite the obstetrics department. His deep eyes stared at the department sign across from him, and his mouth curved upward.
He seemed immersed in some kind of joy. A warm and peaceful aura surrounded him.
That kind of look in his eyes p>
I had only seen it in Calvin’s eyes when he looked at the children.
I let my eyes widen in mock shock. “That’s not possible p>
Clara’s face lit up with satisfaction at my apparent distress. She patted her flat stomach with an exaggerated motion.
“What do you mean, honey? Of course it’s possible,” she said with malicious delight. “In a few months, I’ll be showing properly. You don’t think this baby is fake, do you p>
Her expression was that of a woman thrilled to be carrying the child of the man she loved. But the way she leaned back as if her bump was weighing her down looked ridiculous.
“We weren’t actually planning to get pregnant so soon,” she continued,”But he can’t keep his hands off me. The bathroom, the couch, the balcony… goodness, I’m blushing just thinking about it p>
I fought to keep my expression shocked and devastated as she rambled on.
“You know how he gets when he’s excited. He doesn’t bother with protection. Says it doesn’t feel good. And now we’re expecting this precious little miracle p>
She leaned closer, whispering cruelly.”He has two sons already, you know. But he promised me that once our baby is born, he’ll ship those little brats off to some boarding school far away. They’ll never set foot in this territory again p>
Her eyes gleamed with malice as she continued, “A man only truly loves children born from the woman he loves. Those other two? They’re just bastards he was forced to have. They don’t deserve his love. They never did p>
With each word, rage built inside me like a gathering storm. No mother could listen calmly to someone curse and insult her children like this.
I certainly wasn’t going to.
My jaw clenched so hard it hurt. My fingers curled into tight fists as fury blazed through me.
“Are you done, Clara?” I asked calmly.
Her eyes widened in shock at hearing her real name. How could I possibly know who she was? Her new face was unrecognizable even to her own family.
Before she could recover, I continued.
“I believe you’re the same age as Calvin, making you several years older than me. What gives you the right to call me ’honey p>
I looked her up and down with contempt. “And being that much less attractive than me? The audacity p>
I could see I’d hit her where it hurt. Those were the two things that fueled her hatred. Her belief that I had stolen Calvin from her, and her burning jealousy of my appearance.
Seeing her reaction, I twisted the knife deeper.
“Or wait… have you been staring at that surgically enhanced face in the mirror so long that you think your age got a facelift too p>
I feigned a sudden realization. “You know, despite my divorce from Calvin, I’m still legally his first mate and wife p>
I tilted my head and spoke sweetly, mockingly. “How considerate of you, the mistress, to pay respects to the original wife like this. Should you bow and serve me tea while you’re at it? I could give you a little welcome gift in return p>
Clara’s eyes flashed with rage. “Don’t you dare talk to me like that p>
My gaze turned glacial, my eyes devoid of any warmth as I stared her down.
“In your mind, that’s crossing a line?” I asked softly.
I stepped closer, whispering icily. “You send me those photos every day and then have the nerve to approach me in public to gloat. And you think I’m being too harsh p>
Clara stepped back, startled by the cold fury emanating from me.
She placed a protective hand over her “pregnant” belly and backed away further. “Evelyn, don’t you dare try anything p>
Her voice rose to a panicked pitch. “This baby is a Bloodbane Pack heir! If anything happens to it, Calvin will destroy you p>
