Evelyn’s POV
“As long as you are the Luna of the Bloodbane Pack and firmly hold the position of the rightful mate, what trouble can those mistresses cause? You were just too hasty. You got nothing from the divorce and lost everything p>
I watched Diana Wolfe put on her little show. Her manicured nails cut through the air as she talked. This woman had some nerve. She nearly got my children killed, and now she wanted to give me marriage advice?
I stayed quiet. I wanted to see what sweet talk she’d come up with. She was the one who looked down on me before, the one who desperately wanted Clara to be the pack’s Luna. Now that Clara didn’t work out and I could actually help her, she thought she could just waltz back in and fix our relationship? How naive.
Diana took my silence as agreement. Her shoulders dropped, and her voice got softer.
“I could be like a mother to you if you want. Bring me your problems. I’ll help however I can p>
I felt cold amusement watching her act. I wanted to see how far she’d push this.
Diana quickly shifted back to her family. “Consider my home your home now p>
She paused, watching my face. “My brother needs help. He’d be your uncle p>
I kept my expression blank. This only encouraged her more.
“Don’t worry, dear. I won’t ask for free help.” Diana leaned closer and whispered. “I’m offering you one million dollars. Most people never see that kind of money p>
Her eyes lit up like she’d made an offer I couldn’t refuse. “Just get my brother’s clients into Evelink Biosciences. Simple task, generous pay p>
I watched Diana’s performance with a slight smile.
This high-and-mighty Luna wore designer clothes worth more than what she was offering me. She really thought I could be bought this cheap. That’s why she’d always be small minded. She hadn’t bothered checking what Evelink Biosciences charged for basic services.
“Luna Diana,” I said quietly, “you’ve been married into the Bloodbane Pack for over two decades. Why are you still playing with pocket change? Wolfe Haven International pays out billions in dividends every year. Don’t you get any of that p>
Diana’s smile disappeared. I’d hit her where it hurt.
“Evelyn,” she said, “I truly loved Calvin’s father. It was never about money. We rarely touch the pack company funds. This million is most of my personal savings p>
She clenched her jaw, forcing herself to continue. “If that’s not enough, I’ll give you everything I have. One and a half million total p>
I knew Diana’s situation well enough. Her pack had been minor in Ravenshade before she married Alpha Gregory. After the mateship, her pack business improved and gained access to elite social circles.
They might have secured their position among the wealthy packs. But Calvin cut all business ties with Diana’s relatives when he took control. Most people in their circle were smart enough to see which way the wind was blowing. They knew Calvin disliked his mother, so they stopped working with her pack too.
Diana had spent years putting on a show. She bragged about Alpha Gregory’s love in social circles while secretly funneling money to her struggling pack business. When Alpha Gregory found out, he never gave Diana any company shares.
I had to give Gregory credit. His financial planning protected his son’s inheritance and limited Diana’s access to pack company’ money.
Of course, Alpha Gregory had also threatened Calvin back then. If Calvin didn’t marry me according to the pack alliance agreement, Gregory wouldn’t give Calvin full ownership of the company, leaving Calvin without complete control.
Thinking about the past made my mood sour.
Diana mistook my silence for interest. She caught me glancing at the sofa and thought I was admiring her purse.
“If you promise to get my brother’s clients into the lab,” she said quickly, “this Hermès bag is yours too p>
I looked at her with mild annoyance. The bag was worth maybe fifty thousand. Was that supposed to impress me?
Diana must have sensed her offer wasn’t working. “Evelyn, I know you loved Calvin once. I can help you get him back p>
She leaned closer and lowered her voice. “Men never really forget the first woman who gave them children. Just admit you made mistakes, and he’ll come around p>
Her eyes lit up with what she thought was brilliant strategy. “Your body proved itself by giving him those strong twin boys. Calvin clearly adores them. That gives you better odds than any other woman p>
My calm face turned cold when Diana talked about me like I was just a baby-making machine. The way she discussed my body and my children like they were poker chips in some sick game made me furious.
I looked down and said quietly, “That’s enough p>
I spoke softly, but my tone made Diana go stiff. Her smug look disappeared as she remembered who she was talking to.
“Keep your money and your bag,” I said. “I don’t want them p>
I should have kicked Diana out sooner.
Just as I was about to tell her to leave, someone started yelling outside my hospital room.
“You can’t stop me! Do you know who I am!” A loud, obnoxious voice came from the hallway.
“Sis, get over here! This guard won’t let me through! Tell your daughter-in-law to fire him p>
Diana must have called her brother before coming to see me. The fat, middle-aged man making noise outside was probably her precious younger brother.
She walked to the door and told my security team, “Let him go! He’s my brother p>
Diana came back and sat down, expecting them to listen. But the guards didn’t move.
She had to stand up again. “Are you deaf?! I said let him in p>
The guard looked at me without saying anything. He was waiting for my orders.
Diana’s eyebrows pulled together in anger. She turned to me, her face tight with rage.
“Eve, tell the guards to let him in. He’s your uncle p>
I let the silence drag out. Diana’s confident act was starting to fall apart. I shifted in my wheelchair slowly, wincing from my wound.
“First,” I said finally, “my name is Evelyn. Not Eve, not anything else. Second, that man isn’t my uncle. Third I stared at her coldly. “You don’t give orders here. Not in this room, not in this hospital, and not to my security p>
