I woke up late. Fluttering my eyes open, the first thing I saw was the table clock flashing five in the evening, and I stared at it for a long time without blinking.

I had turned off my cellphone after leaving the underworld last night. I switched off every electronic anyone could use to reach me, closed my door, and closed my heart, seeking peace here, in my solace, this loft where I live alone.

I got up from the bed after a long moment, raking my fingers through my hair as I walked toward the bathroom. I pulled off my briefs and turned on the shower, reaching for my toothbrush, only to slow at the sight of my reflection in the mirror.

My eyes dropped to my chest, to the part already turning purple. I had miscalculated. Lied. Risked everything.

The bullet had silver, and it burned. I took the shot for her without thinking. It was reckless, stupid, and yet so natural. I felt this unreasonable instinct to protect her at any cost.

And instead of treating myself immediately, instead of coming home to heal, I’d stayed, enduring the silver lodged beneath my skin just to make sure all the drugs were delivered in the underworld. Only after that did I return home to rest.

But the delay had weakened my wolf, and it would take hours of sleep before my strength returned fully. I lowered my gaze from my chest and brushed my teeth.

Afterward, I showered and stepped out. In the closet, I slipped on briefs and knee–length shorts, then walked slowly into the kitchen. I was starving.

I opened the refrigerator and my shoulders sagged. It was empty. I made the last dish for her. For Snow.

I closed it and went back to my bedroom to grab my bed coverlet, dragging it toward the living room and dropping it onto the couch. I went to the counter, grabbed a bottle of wine and a packet of cigarettes.

I settled on the couch, lit the cigarette, and took a long drag. I drank straight from the bottle, exhaling smoke after swallowing the wine.

Three cigarettes later, I placed the bottle on the table and lay down, pulling the coverlet over me. I was about to close my eyes when a sharp tingle sparked on my wrist, beneath the tattoo etched into my skin.

Chapter 139

A red beeping light flared. I nearly lost my mind.

It was the connection I shared only with Desmond. Our tracking devices bonded, wired into each other. We always knew each other’s location. But whenever I came into the rainforest, my tracker went void. That way, he knew I was home.

So seeing it beeping from my veins meant only one thing. Desmond was drilling out his tracker, breaking the bond.

My jaw tightened. He was only trying to get my attention because I was unreachable. I tried ignoring it, but the beeping sped up. I groaned angrily.

I rose from the couch and went to my study where my phone lay. I turned it on, and almost immediately his call came in.

“Boss p>

“I will kill you myself if this is unimportant information,” I gritted out before he could speak. Silence dropped on his end. My jaw locked, anger pulsing, wondering why I couldn’t have peace for even a moment. But the truth lay deep in my veins and soul.

Maybe the reason I shut everything off, the world, the lights, the noise was fear. Fear that Marlik wouldn’t be released.

“Marlik didn’t appear in court today. The case is officially closed,” Desmond said. Then he hung up, leaving me frozen, cold.

Slowly I lowered the phone, telling myself it was normal. We couldn’t win on the first try. Something must have gone wrong. I could try again after resting. I shouldn’t go out while still weak.

But I couldn’t help myself.

Jaw clenched, I walked to the living room and switched on the TV. Almost every channel buzzed about him. Marlik Rogue, the suspect who refused to appear in court.

My heart sank. Anger carved into my veins.

Without hesitation, I headed to my closet for a long–sleeved shirt and walked out, grabbing my keys.

I rode out of the tunnel, hit the highway, then the city in no time. After a long drive, I pulled into Godlike Pack territory, breathing slowly to hide my weakness.

I got out and entered the hall, only to hear the clatter of a fork. I moved into the dining where

my elder

As I approached, memories flashed, my first time here. How I ate Godlike leftovers… the bones thrown at me… the scraps of meat spat out and tossed away. I’d accepted them all like a starving rogue.

“Oh, Cupid. You are here,” my father said as everyone slowed their eating. Almira stood quickly and hugged me. I held her, kissed her cheek, then released her.

“Cupid, you came,” she said happily, but I didn’t respond. My eyes were fixed on my father.

“Dad, I p>

“I saw the news,” he cut in, already knowing why I was here. “Your rogue friend didn’t want the trial. He doesn’t want freedom. The case is closed. Honestly, it’s good news. Now you can focus on other things. We all win. Join us for dinner. Come, sit p>

But I wasn’t here to eat.

Gently, I tried again.

“Father… can you help reopen the case p>

Silence fell. He paused for a long moment, then resumed eating as if I hadn’t spoken.

“Father p>

The sudden shove of his plates to the floor made me stop cold, stealing away every word I had left.

He turned to me as though I’d lost my mind.

“I am an Alpha. I have no power over the law. I am no judge. And even a judge cannot reopen a closed case.” His gaze pinned mine but I knew he had a way. That one way. Dangerous to ask, yet my only chance.

I had no other choice.

Slowly, I sank to my knees before him. The stunned silence swallowed the room whole.

“Cupid…” Almira whispered, worried, but I didn’t respond.

This was how precious Marlik was to me.
