That morning, the Miller residence came alive once more with the hum of conversation, bursts of laughter, and the comforting aroma of breakfast drifting from the kitchen. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, brushing the dining table in soft shades of gold.
Althea had been in the kitchen since early, a light cardigan draped over her house dress. Her hair was neatly twisted up. Even in her own home, she remained mindful of her appearance-especially when using the main kitchen. She never wanted anyone to feel uncomfortable because she looked too informal. Courtesy still mattered to her.
She was pouring beaten eggs into a pan when she heard light footsteps approaching.
“May I help?” Eli asked softly, lingering just at the doorway.
The staff assisting nearby exchanged uncertain glances. Althea, however, greeted her with an immediate, warm smile. “Of course. What would you like to do p>
“I can set the table… or cut some fruit p>
“Cut the fruit, then. Be careful with the knife,” Althea said gently. “Gia, please keep an eye on Eli so she doesn’t get hurt p>
“Yes, Mrs. Althea p>
Eli’s face brightened. She washed her hands carefully before picking up the cutting board. Her movements were steady and attentive. Every so often, she glanced toward Althea to make sure her slices were neat enough. Gia occasionally reminded her to slow down and watch her fingers.
“You seem cheerful this morning,” Althea remarked lightly.
Eli gave a small smile. “I like busy
Althea understood the meaning beneath those simple words.
A few minutes later, Daven appeared, already dressed in a crisp suit. He paused at the kitchen entrance, quietly observing the two of them. His gaze softened at the sight of Eli carefully arranging apple slices on a plate.
“I’m heading out first,” he said to Althea, then turned to Eli. “Thank you for helping p>
Eli blinked, slightly startled. “Oh… yes.” Then, before he could fully step away, she asked, “Aren’t you having breakfast with us, Mr. Daven p>
“Not today, Eli,” Daven replied gently. “We have a meeting. You can have breakfast with my wife and Grace. I believe Josh will be joining you soon as well p>
“Oh. All right p>
Althea stepped closer to Daven, and he leaned in to press a light kiss to her cheek.

“I’m sorry I can’t have breakfast with you this morning,” he murmured. “But I’ve asked the office driver to pick you up at noon. Shall we have lunch together at La Gala? You don’t mind, do you p>
Her smile widened. “It’s been a while since we’ve had lunch together. How could I possibly refuse p>
“Good.” He nodded once, then kissed her forehead before leaving the kitchen. Arsen was already waiting near the entrance after bidding Althea goodbye.
Not long after, Chris and Cale came downstairs as well, offering their farewells before heading out.
The house grew noticeably quieter once the sound of car engines faded into the distance.
Josh and Grace hadn’t come into the dining room yet. They weren’t back at school, and they were savoring the slower pace of the morning.
The house felt noticeably quieter after one car after another had driven out through the front gates. The hum of engines had faded, replaced by the soft clink of cutlery and plates from the kitchen.
Althea drew in a slow breath, then turned to Eli. “All right, let’s have breakfast before everything gets cold. And please call Josh and Grace,” she added to one of the nearby staff members.
Not long after, Josh appeared, his hair still slightly damp, with Grace trailing behind him at a half-run toward her seat.
“I’m starving,” Grace declared as she pulled out her chair.
“You’re always starving,” Josh replied casually before sitting down.
Eli stepped forward to pull out Riana’s chair when she joined them at the table. Riana gave her a warm smile. “Thank you, Eli p>
