Chapter 138

Evelyn’s POV

I could hear Rowan and Rhys ducking down in the back seat as bullets pinged against our bulletproof glass. Their red-rimmed eyes and pale faces broke my heart, but they were being so brave, fighting back tears and staying quiet.

Eryx tried his best, but we were outnumbered. Liri Johnson’s men surrounded them, forcing his vehicle to stop. Our security team fought valiantly, but several were already wounded. Just as the rogues started smashing the windows to get to my sons, a black car came out of nowhere, plowing into two of the gunmen.

Leon Robinson had arrived. Thank God.

Through the partially shattered window, I watched Leon rush to our car. His face was a mask of concern as he looked at my boys, both white-faced but determined not to cry.

“Rowan, Rhys, come with me now,” he said, his voice calm despite the chaos.

I felt a surge of relief as my sons were quickly transferred to Leon’s vehicle. Leon must have heard about the attack and raced here immediately.

From my position, I caught sight of Liri Johnson, her face contorted with hatred. She screamed an order that made my blood freeze.

“Whoever takes out those kids gets an extra five million p>

Without hesitation, I spun my car toward hers, adrenaline coursing through my veins. I gunned the accelerator, aiming straight for her vehicle. The impact was brutal, metal crushing against metal as her car spun out. The airbag exploded with a force that knocked the wind out of me, but I felt a dark satisfaction seeing Liri slump unconscious in her seat.

In my rearview mirror, I spotted more vehicles approaching from the distance. Calvin’s reinforcements, finally. But they were still too far away to do any good.

Leon’s security team was fighting hard, but they were clearly outmatched by Liri’s hired rogues.

I could see Leon in his car, carefully securing my boys’ seatbelts before telling his driver to get clear of the conflict.

I later learned he’d been heading to the airport when he got word of the attack and had changed course with minimal backup.

The crash had left me pinned between my seat and the steering wheel. The airbag had deployed and deflated, and I could feel blood trickling down my forehead. The driver’s side mirror was completely shattered, leaving me blind to whatever might be coming up from behind. I thought of my little twins and tried desperately to push the door open, but it had been mangled in the collision. I wasn’t getting out without help.

The sharp smell of gasoline filled my nostrils as the world began to spin around me. Through the haze, I saw a scarred face appear at my window, a gun in hand.

Clara Whitmore.

“Evelyn, I’ve been waiting for this moment!” she snarled, her eyes wild with hatred as she pressed the cold barrel against my temple.

I could almost feel death’s countdown beginning.

“Why did you have to show up again? Why did you have to come back?” Clara’s voice trembled with rage. “Do you know how hard I worked to convince Calvin I wasn’t like the rest of the Calypso Pack? If it weren’t for you, I’d be the Luna of Bloodbane by now. I would have given him children of our own p>

Her entire body shook with emotion, her shrill voice cutting through my dizziness, actually helping to clear my head.

“Clara, Calvin not loving you was his choice. Why blame me for it?” I managed to say, tasting blood on my lip.

She trembled like a rabid animal. “No, it’s all your fault! Seven years ago and now again—you’ve ruined my happiness twice p>

I forced my eyes open wider, feeling blood sliding down my cheek. A drop caught on my eyelash, tinting my vision red.

“That’s bullshit,” I said, seemingly ignoring the gun at my temple while inside my heart hammered with terror.

I gave her a cold smile. “You were around him for years and he never wanted you. How is that my fault when I came along later p>

While talking, I leaned back slightly, one hand discreetly feeling for the seat adjustment button while the other inched toward the knife I kept in the center console.

“Shut up! SHUT UP!” Clara screamed. “You shouldn’t be alive! Those brats Rowan and Rhys shouldn’t exist! You should all be dead!” Her face was contorting with rage when suddenly a powerful voice cut through the night.

“CLARA p>

The fury in that voice was like a raging thunderstorm, with an undertone of barely controlled fear. Clara whipped around toward the approaching figure.

Calvin emerged from the darkness, his tall frame radiating raw power and rage. Each step he took seemed to charge the very air around him with pure anger. Despite everything, my heart skipped seeing him there.Clara’s eyes flickered between worship and insanity as she pressed the gun harder against my temple. “Stay back or I’ll kill her p>

Calvin froze when he saw the gun, his pupils dilating with shock and fear. For a moment, his carefully controlled mask cracked.

“Clara, don’t do anything reckless,” he said, his voice deceptively calm.

“Calvin! How could you do this to me? I’ve loved you for over twenty years!” Through the gun against my temple, I could feel Clara’s entire body trembling. She alternated between sobbing and cursing, a lifetime of emotions spilling out in this moment of crisis.

Calvin’s gaze stayed locked on her hand holding the gun, his lips pressed into a thin line as fear visibly washed over him.

“Calvin, you don’t really love Evelyn, do you?” she asked, her voice desperate. Behind Calvin, I could see both security teams still fighting, with his Bloodbane pack warriors closing ranks around him.

Clara jammed the gun harder against my head, giving a maniacal laugh. “Say it! Say you don’t love her or I’ll kill her right now p>

“Does it matter?” Calvin suddenly smiled, walking closer despite the obvious danger. Within seconds he was just feet away.

His response confused Clara for a beat before she understood his meaning. Rage flared in her eyes. “Stay back! I really will shoot her p>

Calvin seemed almost indifferent to my precarious situation, his eyes cold as ice, his voice eerily calm. “Clara, with or without Evelyn, I will never love you. But if you kill her He paused deliberately.

“What?” Clara asked eagerly. “What will you do p>
