Chapter 58
Evelyn’s POV
I let out a sigh, feeling the tiredness settle deep in my bones.
“You should go to the hospital,” I said to Calvin.
His headaches were getting worse. I wasn’t saying it out of kindness; I simply didn’t want to deal with him losing his mind in front of me.
I turned to leave, not waiting for a response.
But I could sense it, the weight of his stare burning into my back. His jaw was tight, and I could hear the quiet creak of his phone under his grip.
I didn’t turn around.
The next morning,I was helping the children with breakfast when Calvin finally appeared downstairs. The boys were already eating,well-behaved as always, and immediately waved when they saw their father.
“Dad, are you feeling better now?” Rowan asked, his eyes full of worry.
“Does it still hurt?” Rhys added, his small face all scrunched up.
Calvin hadn’t even changed out of his suit from last night. It was wrinkled and messy, a far cry from the sharp,put-together look he usually wore.
Yet he still looked annoyingly good.
Rhys took another bite of his little pig-shaped bread, chewing slowly. I could see him thinking hard about something. Then, all of a sudden, his eyes lit up like he’d just solved a big mystery.
“Dad, when you’re sick, can you ask Beta Zeon for a day off? I can call him for you to ask!” he offered earnestly.
My heart squeezed at his thoughtfulness. Rowan climbed down from his chair and pulled out a seat for his father.
“Dad, sit here,” Rhys said, his tiny voice full of authority, like he was running the whole house.
“Butler Thomas, can you bring my dad some porridge, please? Thank you p>
Little Alexis was watching Calvin with curious eyes, clearly wondering why he was still in our home this morning. She gnawed on her tiny spoon, her big eyes blinking with confusion. I gently pinched her chubby cheek, my heart overflowing with love.
“Baby, don’t chew on your spoon,” I murmured.
She immediately put down the spoon and picked up her pink bowl, taking a big gulp before proudly showing me her accomplishment.
“Alexis, good girl,” I praised her, trying not to notice how Calvin was watching our interaction.
After finishing their breakfast, the boys went to prepare their school bags. I felt my phone vibrate and excused myself to the balcony to take the call. When I returned, I found Rhys hugging my legs, looking up at me with pleading eyes.
“Mom he began.
I crouched down to his level. “What is it p>
“Dad is sick. Can I stay home from school today to take care of him?” His expression was so earnest it nearly broke my heart.
“I’m happy you want to take care of your father, but you need to go to class,” I explained. “Dad will go home where the butler can look after him p>
Or Clara, I thought bitterly.
Rhys lowered his head in disappointment. “But I want to stay with you and Alexis, and take care of Dad too.” He looked up with hope-filled eyes. “Mom, can’t Dad stay here p>
I felt Calvin’s gaze on us. The morning sunlight bathed the room in a warm glow, highlighting the simple elegance of my cream cheongsam-style blouse and white skirt. After three years apart, I noticed how his eyes still followed me with that intensity I once knew so well.
“Rhys, you go to school first,” I said softly, careful not to hurt his sensitive feelings. “If Dad feels unwell, he’ll go to the hospital. By the time you and your brother get out of school, Dad might already be better p>
Rhys looked unconvinced. “Really p>
I nodded with complete confidence in my child-soothing abilities. “Yes, the nurses will give Dad some injections and he’ll feel better. Remember when you were sick? Didn’t you need shots too p>
Rhys recalled his own experience with fever and doctors, nodding slowly. “So if they give him more shots, Dad will get better faster p>
Alexis joined the conversation, holding up her tiny fingers. “Ten shots!” she declared, her eyes curving into adorable crescents.
“Does Dad get bum shots too?” Rowan asked curiously
The mental image of Calvin Wolfe, Alpha of Bloodbane Pack and CEO of Wolfe Haven International, being forced to drop his pants for multiple gluteal injections was almost too much. I nearly lost my composure.
Calvin’s face darkened as the children continued counting fingers, increasing their father’s prescribed “bum shots” from ten to twenty.
“Alright, Rowan and Rhys, you need to get to kindergarten,” I intervened, checking my watch. “We’ll be late if we don’t leave now p>
Before departing, both boys couldn’t resist reminding Calvin to get his shots, mimicking their father’s typically serious and cold demeanor.
“Dad, we’ll check when we get back from school,” they warned solemnly.
I took Alexis with me to drop the boys off at school, assuming Calvin would be gone by the time we returned. I didn’t even think to ask the butler about his whereabouts.
So when Zeon arrived at my door with a laptop and a suitcase, I was bewildered.
“What brings you here, Beta Zeon?” I asked, keeping my calm tone despite my growing irritation.
Zeon, ever the quick-thinking Beta, immediately connected the dots. His eyes flickered before he provided a smooth explanation.
“The young masters called me this morning to say Alpha Calvin would be resting at Madam’s home today. There are some documents that need his signature, so I brought them over p>
I raised an eyebrow, my gaze shifting to our butler for confirmation.
“Alpha Calvin returned to the guest room after breakfast and hasn’t come out since,” the butler reported dutifully.
My eyes landed on the suitcase in Zeon’s hand. I crossed my arms over my chest, eyebrow arched, lips pressed into a cold smile.
“A suitcase full of documents?” I questioned, not bothering to hide my skepticism.
Zeon smiled awkwardly. These are Alpha Calvin’s change of clothes p>
Just then, Calvin emerged from the guest room. Seeing me and Zeon at the door, something shifted in his expression as he recalled our sons’ behavior earlier. His jaw set with determination.
He took the suitcase and document folder from Zeon without a word and returned to the guest room, calling over his shoulder, “I’ll shower and get some sleep. Don’t wake me for lunch p>
