Chapter 71
Calvin’s POV
After agreeing to have Dr. Blake treat Clara’s face, Eve turned and went back into the hospital room without looking at me again.
Earlier, I’d walked past a room and seen Leon Robinson lying there,a man who had no business being here. Even though my Bloodbane Pack was powerful, we couldn’t get Evelink Biosciences to work with us. The Southern Brownfur Pack should have even less chance.
The only explanation was Evelyn.
Though her assistant had spoken quietly earlier, I’d caught Leon’s name. I’d seen how Eve’s expression changed at the mention of her first love, how she’d rushed away without hesitation.
So, she still loved him? Did our five-year mating bond mean nothing to her? Was that why she could reject me so easily back then?
I stood outside thinking for a long time. When I finally returned to the twins’ room, my eyes landed on the sofa.
Eve had fallen asleep sitting there, her head propped on her hand. Was she keeping vigil, waiting for our sons to wake up?
The hospital had added a spare bed for overnight stays.
I leaned down and lifted her carefully. Despite my conflicted feelings, the familiar weight in my arms stirred something deep inside me.
During our five-year marriage, she often waited on the living room couch until she fell asleep. Every time, I’d carry her to our bedroom.
She opened her eyes slowly, looking up at me with confusion.
The exhaustion from these past days had muddled her mind. For a moment, she seemed lost between past and present.
She must have thought it was a dream. “Husband she whispered.
Then she smiled, and I stood frozen, still bent over her.
I narrowed my eyes, studying her on the bed, wondering if that word was meant for the Calvin from five years ago, or for her current husband.
Catching myself, I straightened up and stepped back quickly. She was married now!
In the darkness, I lay on the sofa, staring up. The wolf inside me wanted to break free. I closed my eyes, forcing down the anger in my chest.
To me, Eve was remarried with a daughter.
That was a fact I couldn’t change!
A ray of dawn light penetrated the curtains and fell on Evelyn’s eyes. She frowned slightly in discomfort.
Soon, the light was blocked.
Her brow gradually relaxed.
I pulled the curtains closed, tucked the children in, and went into the bathroom to change back into my previous suit.
When I emerged, I had transformed back into the cold, dignified Alpha.
Nine in the morning.
This was the time Evelyn had arranged for me to meet Professor Blake.
I had been talking with this supposed expert for some time now. The conversation wasn’t going as smoothly as I’d hoped.
“Only if you heal the scars on her face. Price is not an issue, but you must ensure her skin returns to its original condition,” I stated firmly.
The man claiming to be “Professor Blake” was clearly someone close to Evelyn. His face darkened visibly when he heard me repeatedly requesting treatment for another woman.
“Alpha Calvin, I’m curious,” he said coldly. “With your twin sons still undergoing treatment at our lab, how can you find the heart to seek medicine for another woman p>
My voice turned sharp and uncompromising. “That’s my personal business p>
He let out a cold laugh and reminded me, “I’m helping your children because of Eve’s influence, not because I need your money p>
“Evelink Biosciences treats everyone from the highest dignitaries to wealthy family heirs. Every single one of them begs us for life-saving treatments p>
“Any medication developed in our laboratory is sought after by every major pharmaceutical company. Money, if we wanted it, would flow endlessly p>
I could tell he wanted to throw his bank statement in my face. His protectiveness of Evelyn was clear in every word.
Hearing the familiarity with which he spoke about her, my expression darkened further. I also caught the refusal in his words.
Thinking about how Clara had saved Rhys’s life, I felt cornered.
“What would it take for you to help her?” I asked, my voice deep and controlled.
A soft chuckle came from across the desk. “Answer three questions truthfully, and I’ll give you the medicine p>
“Go ahead,” I replied.
He sat up straight, all traces of the playful demeanor he likely showed around Evelyn gone. His tone turned serious and solemn.
“Are you seeking medicine or seeking love p>
“You wasted five years of Eve’s youth. Have you ever regretted the separation p>
“If Eve and Clara were both in danger during a pack territory attack and you could only protect one, who would you choose p>
The questions struck at my core, forcing me to confront feelings I’d been suppressing. My wolf stirred restlessly within me, recognizing truths I had denied for too long.
