Chapter 93
Evelyn’s POV
I couldn’t help but study Calvin’s face as the summer breeze drifted through the partially open window. With those chiseled features and that immense wealth, it was no wonder women threw themselves at him. Even forty years from now, he’d still have young women lined up at his door.
When I mentioned Clara, his temple twitched visibly. He opened his mouth to explain, but before he could get a word out, his Beta burst through the dining room door, breathless and urgent.
“Alpha, there’s been an incident with Miss Whitmore. She’s in critical condition!” Zeon announced, not bothering to lower his voice in the silent dining room.
Calvin’s eyes immediately sought mine, darkening when he caught my smirk.
“I won’t keep the busy Alpha any longer,” I said coldly, pushing back my chair to leave.
His hand shot out, gripping my wrist before I could escape. I looked down at where our hands touched, then back up at his eyes. I saw something there, maybe vulnerability, but I quickly pulled myself together, refusing to get pulled in.
“Clara and I aren’t what you think,” Calvin stated firmly. He turned to his Beta, keeping his grip on me. “Continue, Zeon p>
I tried to pull away twice, but his grip was unrelenting. All I could do was stand there beside him, forced to listen to Clara’s situation.
“The cosmetic procedure went wrong, Alpha. She had a severe reaction to the medication. They’ve transferred her to another hospital for emergency treatment. She’s still in surgery,” Zeon reported.
Calvin’s brow furrowed. “Wasn’t she supposed to be having reconstructive surgery? How did it become a cosmetic procedure p>
Zeon shifted uncomfortably. “I assume she… decided to get some additional work done while she was there p>
Calvin’s expression darkened, and I couldn’t suppress a small laugh.
When his cold gaze landed on me, I held up my free hand. “I’m not laughing at her condition. I just found your Beta’s explanation rather amusing p>
Calvin’s face softened slightly. “Zeon, arrange for someone to monitor the situation. Do whatever’s necessary to keep her alive p>
My amusement vanished instantly. Of course he would move heaven and earth to save precious Clara. I tried again to free my wrist, this time stomping on his foot with all my strength.
Calvin winced but merely loosened his grip slightly, careful not to hurt me despite my assault.
“Evelyn, please listen to my explanation,” he said, his voice deep and resonant.
Unable to break free, I sighed in defeat. “Fine. Explain away. I can’t wait to hear about your epic love story p>
“I don’t love Clara,” Calvin stated simply.
That made me laugh outright. “You didn’t love me either. Remember that Pack gathering five years ago? I waited for you all night while you paraded around with Clara on your arm. You wanted her as your Luna, didn’t you p>
Calvin’s jaw tightened. “I thought you understood the pack political implications of p>
“Pack Political implications?” Fury spiraled through my brain, momentarily derailing my reason. “You think I only cared about politics? Do you have any idea what I was p>
I stopped abruptly, horrified that I had almost told him about my pregnancy back then.
Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes to regain composure.
From our first meeting, I’d recognized Calvin for what he was, a man incapable of true emotion. He didn’t love me then, but he didn’t love anyone else either. He wasn’t unfaithful, just self-absorbed.
I’d thought we could at least have a marriage built on mutual respect and support. But somewhere along the way, my stupid heart decided to fall for him anyway.
After our sons were born, Calvin seemed to value our family more. I foolishly saw hope, even planned to confess my feelings. I found out I was pregnant again. I was scared his mother would take the child away, but I still wanted to tell him, and then… he abandoned me. For Clara.
Calvin’s fingers tightened around mine.
“Let go. I need to check on the children,” I said, finally wrenching my hand free just as he uttered the words I never expected to hear.
“I’m sorry p>
His voice, normally so commanding, sounded almost vulnerable. I felt my eyes sting and quickly looked up at the crystal chandelier overhead. The great Alpha Calvin Wolfe, who had the entire city of Ravenshade at his feet, never apologized to anyone.
Now he was actually saying he was sorry.
Before I could process those three words, he continued.
“I’m sorry for ignoring your pain five years ago and accepting your rejection p>
“I’m sorry for blaming you when Alexis was hurt in Viremont p>
In all our years together, he had never apologized so sincerely.
He didn’t know how deeply that night had wounded me. He was laughing and chatting happily with Clara while holding my twins. I, as the omega Luna of the pack, was looked down upon by everyone.
I turned my face away. “You can apologize, but I won’t accept it. Those aren’t the only things you should be sorry for p>
The subtle catch in my voice affected him visibly. Something unfamiliar flickered across his face. Was it genuine remorse?
He released my wrist only to grasp my arms gently, turning me back to face him.
“Evelyn, I think there are many misunderstandings between us. If you’re willing, we could address them one by one. Perhaps p>
Zeon’s phone buzzed with an urgent call. He hung up and quickly walked over to Calvin.
Calvin’s expression shifted as he listened, his hands dropping from my arms.
He met my gaze. “I need to leave. Please stay home with the children for the next few days. If you must go out, take additional security p>
“Everyone outside is from the Bloodbane Pack. They’re loyal and trustworthy. They’ll handle anything you need p>
I listened to what he was telling me but didn’t feel any warmth from his concern. His promises to explain everything later meant nothing to me now.
Without crossing any boundaries, Calvin simply said, “Wait for me,” before hurrying out, heading directly to the airport for whatever emergency demanded his immediate attention. As the door closed behind him, I collapsed into the chair.
Every time I thought about our marriage, it brought me pain. Calvin never publicly acknowledged my status as Luna, and I was constantly looked down upon by the pack because I was a “wolfless Omega p>
He was cold and distant, only caring about the pack and his company. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that trying to win love from a man with a cold heart is like falling into an icy abyss. To breathe again, you have to hold your breath and swim upstream through thick layers of ice.
I’m actually quite happy with my life now. I’ve moved past all that heartache, built my own career, and opened up new possibilities for myself.
I don’t want to ruin the beautiful relationship I’ve worked so hard to rebuild with my children.
