Fred was silent now, slowly turning the wine in his glass.

She would never stoop to harassing Samantha and Algernon unless she was desperate.
If she’d sunk this low, it meant they had completely cornered her.
“Even if Trista did go after her,” Fred said, his tone turning serious, “it’s because you drove her to it p>
He looked directly at Cassian. “Trista is not the problem here p>
Cassian rubbed his temples, his voice low with fatigue. “I’m leaving for my trip this week. I need you to keep an eye on things while I’m gone p>
“I’m worried Trista will cause trouble for Samantha again p>
Fred scoffed. “Then just take Samantha and the kid with you, problem solved p>
Cassian frowned.
He searched for a suitable counter–argument, but found none.
Fred went for the jugular. “Or you could just kill Trista. Then both of them would finally shut up p>
Cassian looked up, his eyes suddenly freezing over. He stared hard at Fred.
The air hung heavy between them.
Fred sighed, raised his glass, and looked away, adding in a low voice-

Fred spread his hands. “Either you die, or they both settle down p>

Three days after Cassian left.
Trista’s mother’s obsidian cane finally sold.
The buyer not only signed the papers immediately but included a clause: Trista held the first right of repurchase if he ever chose to sell it.
The moment the $1.5 billion USD cleared, Trista messaged Xander immediately, inviting him to dinner to thank him in person.
The restaurant lighting was soft, the room perfectly insulated.

After leaving Xander, Trista bought a mountain of groceries and went home.
That night, her father was home from work, and her brother from the Werewolf Academy. The three Silverlight wolves were together for a rare dinner.
Trista tied on an apron and cooked a lavish meal, fully present with them.
Seeing the gray in her parents‘ hair, her heart twisted.
After Silverlight fell, they should have been relaxing. Instead, they were still stressed about the future because of her.
But to buy back the cane, to truly stand on her own two feet, she had to leave them and build a career somewhere else.
After dinner, the family gathered in the living room.

She looked down, silent for a heavy moment, before forcing herself to continue. “I’m going abroad for a while, to study. I’ll come home as soon as I can p>
Randolph and Ulva exchanged a look of deep sorrow, unable to speak.
Finally, Ulva spoke. “Alright. You’re young. Do what you need to do. Don’t worry about us p>
Attwater stood at his bedroom door, his eyes red, fingers digging into the doorframe.
He wasn’t the little pup who used to follow her everywhere, but the devastation on his face was clear.
Later that night, she tapped on his door.
