I struggled, but the Alpha’s presence overpowered my spirit, and slowly I was forced down into the rumpled sheets.
Something cold was poured down my throat. Was it poison? Was it his draught that would make my mating heat come upon me? Was that why I felt molten and incandescent?

Again that shadowy presence loomed, sinister and foreboding at the side of my bed. I saw him reach for me and I slapped at his hands, knowing my strength was gone and the best I could do was a pathetic, weak effort compared to his power.
Still, I fought.
“You will have to kill me,” I panted, winded. My lungs were on fire and every movement ached with pain,” I will not assist you in harming Gideon. Even if he doesn’t love me p>
The shadowy figure froze.
“I will not bear your heir!” I spat, collapsing onto the sheets, “You may call yourself a king, but I know you are a devil! I will never betray my Alpha p>
My breaths sounded hard and heavy in the room. Like the crashing of waves on a shore. The man next to my bed frowned down at me. His broken face a handsome mask over his depravity.
“Avery,” his voice rasped across my skin, scratching at my wounds.
I rolled away from him. Buried my head in my arms. I could not listen to the Rogue King’s lies!
“Kill me if you must,” I sobbed, “Just let my mother go p>
The brief burst of strength was ebbing away from me now. A great weariness was sinking into my bones, dragging me down into the darkness.
“I won’t betray him,” I repeated, my voice soft and weak in my own ears. Barely more than a whisper, “You can’t make me betray Gideon,” I shuddered, willing it to end quickly.
“Why do you care so much about him?” the voice asked, deep and terrifying. 1
“I don’t know,” I gasped, “He wouldn’t protect me, so I suppose I shouldn’t protect him. And yet p>

Why did the voice now sound like Gideon? Why did his face swim before my eyes now? I blinked, trying to focus, but the sight of Gideon’s face was doubled, like looking through a double-paned window. (1

“Doctor!” I heard someone yelling, “Fetch the doctor p>
I smiled up at the ceiling. Gideon was safe. That was all that mattered.

Talking was so tiring. I couldn’t find the breath to push the words out of my throat.
Someone was holding my hand now. Perhaps it was my mother. Perhaps she had found me. No. My mother was locked away. I might never see her again.
Tears leaked from the corners of my eyes. My skin was so hot they seemed to evaporate on my skin immediately.
Who was stroking my fingers? Who was gently holding my hand? Not him. Never him.
