“Are you ill?” Asher stared at me.
I stood slowly, trying to ignore my shaking legs. “I think I contracted food poisoning p>
“We should take you to see a doctor, then.” He grabbed my wrist. “You need to be in tip-top shape for the mating ceremony p>
My stomach twisted again for multiple reasons. Lingering nausea. Fear. And dread. If Asher found out I was pregnant… What would he do to my child?
“I… I’m fine,” I lied, but my pale face spoke volumes. Asher began pulling me away from the chamber pot. I suddenly had an idea, and froze. “Can I at least change first? I don’t want to be wearing… this any longer.
Asher looked at me, then nodded. “Very well I’ve got some clothes in there.” He gestured to the bedroom off to the side. “Put on whatever you like. I’ll get the doctor p>
He left after that. The guard remained outside the tent, but not all was lost. I moved quickly, rifling through his drawers until I found something suitable-a dark pair of pants and a matching shirt. It was close enough in color to some of the uniforms I’d seen the Omegas wearing. Maybe I could slip out unnoticed.
I pulled on the clothes, which were too big but good enough. Then, I pulled my hair back and covered it with a men’s hat. I moved around the perimeter of the tent and tested the fabric for loose spots that could be pulled up.
“Come on… Come on… Aha!” I finally found stretch of fabric that was slightly loose and able to be pulled up. If I could just crawl through, I could make a run for it-

bed before I could protest and sat me down on the edge. I wrang my hands in my lap as an old, weathered woman with long gray hair and animal bones hanging around her neck, entered the tent.
She walked up to me and leaned close, studying my face intently with rheumy eyes.
“Hm… Doesn’t look sick to me…” she muttered.
“Well, she was just vomiting a minute ago,” Asher said. “She had one bite of scrambled eggs and that was that p>
“Interesting…” She looked at me. “Have you been getting nauseous often? In the mornings p>

The doctor chuffed and gestured to the pillows. “Lay down. I want to look at your belly p>

“You heard the woman,” Asher barked. “Lay. Down p>

I obeyed, purely out of fear, and laid down on the pillows. The woman pulled my shirt up and palpated her gnarled hands around on my belly. I stayed stock still, silently praying that she wouldn’t feel anything. 1
Behind her, Asher glared at me with his arms folded. There was a long silence as she worked. She then pulled a pouch of herbs out of her pocket, opened it, and waved it under my nose.
“What’s this smell like?” she asked.
My nose itched from the foul scent of the herbs, and I felt a sudden urge to retch again.

“I don’t know.” I covered my mouth and nose with my sleeve. “But it smells awful. Please get it away, or else I’ll p>
Too late. I leaned over the side of the bed and puked what little bile I had left in my stomach. The doctor, as if sensing what would happen, caught it with a bucket she had in her hand.
When I was finished, she turned to Asher. “she doesn’t have food poisoning, Sir. She’s pregnant.
