The color drained from the faces of those nearby. Those were not words to be spoken lightly. If such talk spread to the wrong ears, Mac’s career would be over.
Eda’s expression darkened. “Lillian, you should be careful with your words. Making things up like that could get you sued for slander p>
“Making things up?” Lillian’s tone was leisurely as she swirled the wine in her glass. “When your friend said it just now, you seemed quite in agreement. Everyone here heard it. How does that suddenly become my fabrication p>
Adeline’s face went pale. “Nonsense! That was you saying it, not me p>
Eda shot Adeline a murderous glare. Idiot. In two sentences she’s dragged us right into Lillian’s trap and buried us both.
“Lillian, Adeline was only joking,” Eda said quickly, forcing a smile. “We’re children—we shouldn’t be gossiping about adult affairs. You all continue chatting. I need to greet some of our other guests.” With that, she walked off briskly, her face clouded, Adeline and the others scrambling to follow.
Lillian’s lips curved into a cold smile as she watched them retreat.
Natalie gave her a big thumbs-up. “You’re amazing, Lillian! Took you all of two lines to send them packing. I need to study under you p>
Lillian pushed a few chicken wings from her plate toward her. “Better focus on eating. Winning with strength is impressive too p>
Daylen chuckled softly. He was starting to see that beneath her cool exterior, Lillian wasn’t cold at all. At least with her friends, she was loyal and warm.

Upstairs, Eda stormed into her bedroom and began smashing everything in sight. Adeline stood frozen, shaken by the sight of her so unhinged.
“That bitch, that bitch-Lillian always ruins everything for me!” Eda shrieked, her face contorted.
Adeline hurried to soothe her. “Exactly. She’s always against you. But Eda, don’t let it get to you. She’s just jealous. Think about it-she’s an orphan, she has nothing. Of course she envies you p>
The words calmed Eda somewhat.
“She pretends to be weak, pretends to be kind, and parades in front of Daylen. Are all those boys blind?” she spat bitterly.
She had the family, the grades, the accomplishments-yet somehow, no one seemed to see. While Lillian, who did nothing, drew every gaze without effort. Why?
Adeline’s voice was gentle, coaxing. “Daylen’s only blinded by her facade. Once he sees her true nature, he’ll regret it p>
Eda’s eyes narrowed. “And how do we make her show her true nature p>
Adeline leaned in and whispered a plan. By the time she finished, a sharp gleam lit Eda’s gaze. The two girls exchanged a knowing smile.

Downstairs, in a quiet corner of the hall.
Lillian, Natalie, and Daylen sat together, avoiding the whirl of the dance floor.
Lillian wasn’t interested in parties. Natalie was only here for the food. Daylen hated socializing.
So the three of them gathered in their little hideaway. Daylen and Natalie bantered back and forth, while Lillian sipped her wine, smiling faintly as she watched them spar.
Eda and Adeline reappeared, dressed in fresh outfits, their eyes sweeping the room until they found the trio.
The two approached.
“So this is where you were,” Eda said lightly, fixing her smile in place. “Why not join the dancing p>
