In the conference room, every executive’s face was grim as hell.
I laid all the evidence on the table.
Including the list of gifts I’d bought Alexander over the years our chat records.
Plus all my investments in Montgomery Corp-every single transaction printed out.
I addressed everyone in the boardroom:
“One Alex Montgomery can’t touch Sterling Corp. What’s with all the sad faces p>
A senior shareholder suddenly slammed his pen on the table.
“Eleanor, I’ve been here since your father’s time. I’m old enough to be your uncle, so let me be straight with you-now’s not the time for any moves. You should step down temporarily p>
“Wait for this to blow over, let things settle, then come back.
“As for your position, we’ll pick someone to fill in p>
My hands clenched into fists under the table.
I looked around the room.
“Does everyone else feel the same way p>
The PR director cleared her throat nervously.
“CEO Sterling, what you’ve shown only proves there was a romantic relationship-it doesn’t clear you of using your position to pressure Mr. Montgomery p>
I let out a cold laugh, cutting her off.
“How to disprove it, what arguments to make-isn’t that supposed to be your job p>
She took a deep breath.
Removed her company badge from around her neck.
“Ms. Sterling, if that’s how you see it, then I can’t help you. I’m just PR-I can’t clean up the mess you’ve made p>
Several other directors stood up too.

The business director was Alexander’s cousin, Thomas Montgomery.
He looked at me with a heavy expression.
“Ms. Sterling, just stop struggling. You used to call me cousin n-law, remember? After what you’ve done to my cousin, you think you can walk away clean? That puts us in an impossible position p>
I stared at him, finding it absurd.
Years ago, because of Alexander, I’d fought against everyone’s objections to put him in this position.
He should know better than anyone how I treated Alexander.
But now he was turning his back on me.
Slandering me without proof.
I looked at all these people in front of me.
And understood something.
The Montgomery family had their fingers in way too many pies.
“Niece, stop being stubborn. With your father gone, I should be looking after you. Don’t worry-go home and rest for a while. We’ll keep the company running smooth p>
I didn’t respond.
The office was so quiet you could hear everyone breathing.
They were all waiting for me to announce my leave of absence.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
I saw the name on the screen and put it on speaker.
Alexander’s voice filled the room.
“So? Have you made up your mind, Ms. Sterling? With all this internal and external pressure, Eleanor, you don’t have any other choice. Just give up p>
Give up?
Alexander, after all these years together, you still don’t know me at all.
Everyone I want to destroy stays destroyed. No one gets to bounce back.
