Mr. Montgomery froze, the color draining completely from his face.
He stormed out of Sterling Corporation headquarters, dazed and hollow.
All the rage and fear he’d been bottling up finally erupted.
He rushed home to find Alexander pacing anxiously.

He exploded, no longer trying to keep the dignity of the family head.
“For that Chloe woman, ruining yourself wasn’t enough-you had to drag the whole Montgomery family down too p>
Alexander’s face went pale under his father’s fury. “Dad… you used to support me… you even said if we won p>
“Support you?” Mr. Montgomery barked, jabbing a finger at his nose. “You thought Eleanor would just keep giving in because she loved you? That faking suicide and crying would make her cave? Congrats, kid-she’s playing for keeps now, and the Montgomery family is finished. Happy? How much is your precious love worth now p>
Alexander trembled, looking desperately at Chloe for backup.

Mr. Montgomery whipped his anger toward her.

Chloe went pale, saying nothing, frozen in place.
Alexander watched-the unprecedented viciousness of his father, Chloe’s retreat-and felt his heart sink into an icy
pit.
Business partners and smaller companies dependent on the Montgomerys quickly distanced themselves. Some even pounced, snapping up market share while the family collapsed.
Funding dried up. Their massive empire crumbled at breakneck speed.
Alexander’s world came crashing down.
