Chapter 446
“He’s upstairs with Carl. That poor boy hasn’t woken up yet p>
“Probably all the trauma and not to mention the meds the doc will have him on. Is he going to be all right p>
Jake would never forgive himself if the boy never recovered.
“Carl seems to think so, but we need him to wake up p>
“Do we know who he is or why he’s here p>
“We won’t know that until he’s conscious and we ask. Do you want something to drink?”. She asked.
“No thanks. Is Evelyn not here p>
“She’ll be here a little later. I should have called but I still want us to have lunch. Come sit p>
So, I did. I sat at the table and tried my best to come up with a conversation. It was never awkward between Charlotte and I but sometimes I just didn’t know what to say.
“Jake mentioned your gran had a fall. How is she p>
“She’s fine, cool as a cucumber like always”. Nothing was a big deal to my gran when it came to herself. She could be run over and still she would be fine.
“And how are things between you p>
“Also, fine”. I smiled.
We would always be fine. We had disagreements, falling outs but we would always be fine when it really came down to it. We were family and that’s all that mattered.
She was the only person I had when I had no one. It had always been the two of us for so long. I could never not have her in my life regardless of what l’ve said in the past.
“Is she back for good p>
“I think so”. I nodded. “Well, I think she wants to be p>
“And that’s what you want?”. She placed a mug of coffee in front of me. The coffee I didn’t want but I took it with a smile.
“I have no issue with her being here if that’s what you’re asking”. I took a sip of my coffee; I didn’t like the way that came out. I hope it didn’t sound rude.
“Oh gosh sweetheart no”. She stopped what she was doing and came to stand beside me. “I didn’t mean to pry Leah, and I only want what’s best for you. I think your gran being back is great p>
“Let’s hope so”. I laughed. “What are you cooking because it smells amazing”. I asked changing the subject. I didn’t want to talk about my gran and her reasons for staying.
It wasn’t up to me on what she did. Yes, she was staying because of me but that was beside the point.
“Chicken noodle soup and homemade sour dough bread”. She smiled.
Of course, it was homemade, of course, it was sourdough.
Truthfully, I couldn’t wait to taste.
“I also have chicken and parmesan parcels in the oven”. She winked.
“That’s a family favourite p>
“Is everyone coming to lunch?” I asked.
“I’ve made enough for everyone if they appear they can eat.
“They’re not here?”. I frowned.
“Only Jake and Carl are here. They’re all out patrolling the grounds. Jake’s adamant that boy wasn’t alone”
“He is?” I made a face.
“We don’t know if it was an accident or we are under threat. The boy being hurt could be a ploy to get into our territory and attack p>
Surely not. Who would use a kid as bait? Not even that he got hurt badly and if it was done to attack us then why hasn’t it happened?
“I think Jake needs a rest. He’s been up for hours and he’s probably not thinking straight”. I didn’t believe for a second this was all a ploy to try and attack us.
And attack us for what?
“He probably does but you know what he’s like. He won’t stop until he knows for sure that everyone is safe p>
She wasn’t wrong there, but he was going to burn himself out. He was thinking way too much into it without knowing for certain what was going on.
“I don’t understand why this happened. Who would let a child out at that time of night on their own p>
“It’s different when you’re a wolf. You want the independence, the freedom of being able to do it on your own p>
“That’s not an excuse”. I frowned. “He’s still a kid regardless if he’s a wolf or not. He shouldn’t have been roaming the woods on his own p>
“You’re right”. She nodded. “But we still must get to the bottom of why he was roaming our woods. Is he part of a pack, is he on his own. Who knows”. She shrugged.
“I’m sure he’ll wake soon, and we’ll get to the bottom of it p>
“I thought I heard your voice”. Jake appeared in the doorway. “How was breakfast?”. He asked.
“Good”. I nodded. “Are you coming home?”. I know I was here for lunch but Jake getting rest was more important. He spiralled when he didn’t get enough sleep and right now I didn’t need for him switching off and his wolf taking over.
It was hard enough getting through to him when he was normal.
“Yeah, in a few hours. I need to wait this out p>
“No, you need to come home and sleep. I’m sure you’ll be the first to know when he wakes p>
“Carl is here Jake; he’s not going anywhere so go home with Leah. I’ll pack some food up to take with you p>
To my surprise he didn’t argue. He took his phone from his pocket did whatever he was doing and before I knew it, we were walking the short distance home.
